HELP
« on: December 20, 2009, 08:59:58 AM »

just bought the dns-321 and I'm having some problems, not sure if its me or the unit.  I even contacted tech assist without figuring out what I'm doing wrong.

My first problem is the email setup I'm pretty sure that the settings are correct, but still can't get it to send a test email.  I'm using a Linksys router with the dns-321, the tech support advised me to create a gmail account as my rogers was not working, did this but still cannot get it to work.

My second problem is transfer rate I'm getting around 7-9 mbps is this is this normal or is my setting wrong, I've tried all MTU settings stil the same.

any help would be appriciated.

If you have 100mbit connections, your transfer rate is about right.  You can double that if you use gigabit all around with jumbo frames.

As far as the email, perhaps posting a screen shot of your configuration will help.  I have no problems using the email capability.

Alexander,
Well I will start out by asking you a few question followed with some answer...

1) What format did you use (EXT2, EXT3).  From the number I suspect EXT3 and your numbers are normal.  You can probably bump that up a little by changing the MTU setting to 4000.  If you change your format to EXT2, you gain performance but lose some data safety.  Look up Linux Ext3 Journling to get an idea of what I'm talking about.  I originally went with EXT3 for safety of my data but didn't realize the performance tradeoff.  I'm now running EXT2 and have my NAS on a good seperate UPS.  With both drives running it only consumes 14 watts of power.
2) Are you using Gigabit all the way through on your ethernet connections?
3) Your email is not too tricky but you need to know the port the email goes to.  If you can tell me you last part of the email address you want the email sent to like my example here "@verizon.net".  I will go through the process for a verizon.net email address which works on my NAS.
 Login Method = Account
 User Name = JoeSchmuck
 Password = (your password)
 SMTP Server = outgoing.verizon.net
Sender Email = JoeSchmuck@verizon.net  (not my real email address)
 Reciever Email = JoeSchmuck@verizon.net

The tricky part is normally the SMTP server.  Sometimes your ISP will require a non-standard port.  Verizon is changing it's port from 25 to 587 so I'm shocked my setup still works.  I'm certain it will fail when they shut off port 25, then I need to use a different email address, or maybe one of the next firmware updates will include the option to change the port number.  We could hope.

Like to know how you make out.

The classic solution seems to be to get a gmail account, which seems to work well for many people.

I like my two gmail accounts.  My daughter has a gmail account.  They are good to have.  Free is good.  But I do tend to use my hotmail and msn.com accounts more.  Have had them since 2001 and thought my JoeSchmuck account would be a toss away after 6 months (SPAM was bad at times) but I still use it all the time.  It's actually one of my primary email accounts now.

Cheers

first thanks all for you reply.

1. the format I used is EXT2
2. I tries all the MTU setting ans at 4000 I'm now getting 8mbps.
3. I am not using gigabit throughtout the network, router is old will upgrade , 1 of my pc's does and tried it but the same result, there is a bottleneck with the, but the speed I find is still really low or I might be wrong.
4. I'm with Rogers Internet they use SMTP.broadband.rogers.com and port 587.
5. my router is Linksys BEFW11S4.

I'd suggest the gmail account, perhaps there's something about the Rogers account that is the issue.

Yes, I concur with using a different email account.

Also, I guess you have the router between the NAS and the computers?  I think that's slowing things down for you.  A solution to buying a new router is to just buy a gigabit network switch.  Plug everything into it and it into your router.  Of course if any of your computers is only 100Mb then it will feel the pain but any others will run beter.  One recommendation is the Linksys 5 port switch.  You will find it can get hot if you lay it flat, so I lay mine on it's side so the vents can be used.  There are other options but that is the one I use.  I didn't want to buy a router with gigabit ports since they were cost a few bucks more than I needed to pay.
