DDNS
« on: December 19, 2009, 01:39:19 AM »

Any suggestions on how to access my DNS-323 over the internet? We have Verizon DSL and they are DHCP. I tried signing up for a dynamic DNS support site but it didn't work. They suspended my account because of constant IP changes or something like that (this is all new to me). Verizon won't give a fixed IP address.

Thanks.

Quite often, the popular ISP's have terms of use and/or policies that allow them to suspend accounts that appear to exhibit high upstream/downstream activity.  You will likely need to locate an ISP that provides a static IP address; I recommend looking for a less popular ISP in your area.

In Canada: http://www.canadianisp.ca
In United States: http://www.findanisp.com, http://www.isp-planet.com

Can you provide more details as to what you are looking to do?  Exposing the DNS-323 to the Internet may compromise data you wish to keep private.

Two questions -

What are you using to update the DynamicDNS setting - is the DNS-323?
What firmware are you running on the DNS-323?

If you are using the DNS-323 - read on ...

Early firmware versions had a bug that would cause them to repeatedly update the DDNS server even if the ip address had not changed and this has led to account suspension such as you describe - I believe this was fixed in the later firmware, but I cannot tell you in what version - you'd need to check the firmware release notes.

Also - the DNS-323 has to repeatedly check with an external source to determine if the public ip address has changed - many routers also offer DDNS support, and the router "knows" it's public address without having to look elsewhere for the information, personally I feel the router is the best place to run the DDNS updater.

I am currently using the DDNS setting in my DNS-323 with the latest beta.  It appears that it's properly updating the account and not allowing it to suspend.  Other equipment, including several different D-Link routers, used to let the account expire.

I think if you upgrade to 1.08b8, the DDNS will work correctly.

BTW, I have a DynDNS account, which is the same service you would be using if you registered for D-Link's DDNS.  I just used my name/password and all is well.

I use DynDns.org flawlessly through my router (I have a Linksys RVS4000).  As fordem recommended, your best bet would be to leverage DDNS support on your router.

Unless DDNS doesn't work on your router. :D
