Having issues sharing data, maintaining connecting
« on: December 26, 2009, 11:51:00 PM »

Some background info.

Connecting to a Linksys WRT160N:
DNS-323 (wired) - Firmware 1.07
Two Windows 7 Ultimate machings (64-bit) (wired)
XBox 360 (wireless)
Printer (wireless)

Now for my first issue.

My DNS-323 loses its IP address and for the DHCP server on my router to pick it up again, I have to physically unplug it and put it into another port.  I do have the DHCP server on the DNS-323 disabled, so that shouldn't be interfering, and I have tried giving it a static IP address.  This is extremely frustrating to say the least.

My second issue is how can I share my media files effectively amongst the PCs and the Xbox?

Right now I'm currently in the process of saying "Screw you DNS-323 I'm just going to use you for backup" however there has to be a better way.  The libraries in Windows 7 don't seem to play nicely and my Xbox doesn't see it at all.

Any advice on the first issue and how to set up the second issue properly would be very welcomed.

Thank you.

The same issue occured with a static IP address with the DNS-323 and the router, so I haven't tried with the Xbox.

As for the media, mainly music, however there are pictures and some videos as well.  99% of the music is DRM (aka the devil) free, whereas most of the videos are locked down with it.

Right now the solution I'm looking at is to get rid of that router and get something else, along with using a wired connection on the Xbox.

I have some CAT6 cables on order (my cables are CAT5 with one or two being CAT5e or whatever that enhanced version was), which shouldn't make any difference at all (unless I upgrade to a gigabit router).

As a suggestion, try disabling hibernation on the 323 with your current setup and see if it makes a difference.
