Can't access w/Win7 PC
« on: December 24, 2009, 09:37:09 AM »

I just bought an HP G71-340US laptop with Win7 64bit OS and an Intel WiFi Link 1000BGN network card and am unable to connect to my DIR-615 B router either wireless or hard-wired. Whether wireless or hardwired, when I ping the router (192.168.0.1) I get "General Failure." When I bypass the router, I'm able to connect to the internet. My home network appears on my laptop list of networks but when I try to connect to the router wireless and supply the security key, the connection process then doesn't complete, even after rebooting the router. When my laptop boots, I do get a warning message that D-Link's Network Magic program has compatibility issues w/Win7 but everything else I've found indicates the DIR-615 itself has no compatibility issues. Can anyone help me pinpoint where the problem is here?

Uninstall the software that came on the CD because you can configure the router directly through the web interface, this way you do not have to worry about the incompatibility issue with windows 7. Next you want to try a wired connection to one of the 4 switch LAN ports on the back of the router. Check your settings in windows networking for your wired lan card and make sure its set for DHCP ( obtain IP address automatically ). Plug the cable in and hopefully you will get an IP. Verify this by going to start, run, cmd - at the command line type ipconfig /all and look for your network card to make sure there is an IP address in the same range at the router. If the router address is 192.168.0.1; you sould see something like that, could be 192.168.0.4 or even 192.168.0.200 depending the DHCP pool and network mask. If all is well then open up your web browser and go to 192.168.0.1; log in, set a password for admin, then configure your wireless network. WPA, passkey etc. After this is done restart the router for good measure. Unplug the wired LAN, the let your wireless card find the routers name (SSID, you can change the name in the setup if you want). Allow the computer to connect to your router, since you configured it as a secured router you will be prompted to enter the same passkey you created in the setup.

OH, if you are curious as the why you are uninstalling the software for the dlink from your computer, its because we want to allow windows itself to manage the wireless connection. Because right now the dlink software is managing it and since you are getting an error message on bootup, surely the dlink software is unable to negotiate the secured connection reliably. You do not need this software installed to use the router on any computer. I have a bunch of linux machines connecting to mine. As a matter of fact the router itself is running on an embedded linux distribution. The software is merely provided as a convenience to the user to aid in the setup. But if you know how to get to the main routers configuration screens through the web server and know how to make your own settings then you dont really need the software.
