cannot access DNS-323 FTP from outside my network
« on: December 26, 2009, 02:54:35 AM »

I want to setup a ftp on my DNS-323 and use it outside my network but I can get it working... please advice me.

This is my configuration:
DNS-323 with 1.07 firmware
DI-524UP with 1.04 firmware

I am using DHCP but my DNS-323 has a static IP.
In my router I created virtual server and forwarded port 20, 21, 65501-65510 to the DNS-323.
The ftp works fine when I connect to the internal IP.

The ftp does not work when I connect using the external IP. Login works fine but when I list files it get stuck.

I tried to set up an ftp server on my computer and with the port forwarding above it works fine. Hence I assume I shall change something on the DNS-323 to get the setup functional.

Please advice me!

Turn Passive off in your ftp client and try again

Great! I use a client called gFTP and in settings I have unchecked "Passive file transfers" which I assume is turning off passive. Still the same problem. When I also changed the list command to not follow symbolic links it works!!! (If I run in active mode without following symbolic links the client crashes).

If I put the DNS-323 in DMZ everything works fine without tuning client settings. I do not want to use DMZ since it opens basically everything including uPnP server.

The thing is that I want to share images with my grand dad and I am sure he cannot fool around with FTP clients nor advanced settings. I just want to send the ftp-link that he can open in his web browser.

Any ideas on what can be done?

Do you have a DDNS?

No, I do not use DDNS. I enter the current IP of my router (I know it is not static over time). Will it make a difference for my FTP functionality?

Thanks! Now it works fine with ftp from firefox accessing via dyndns! Perfect!
NB: I just read the release notes for 1.08. There are some news when it comes to FTP, e.g. possibility to specify FTP passive ports. That might work as well.

It seems like my DI-524UP does not connect to dyndns though. It get "Auth fail" when I try to connect. Any ideas on that issue?

I have the exact same configuration as you, same router, same nas and same FW (on both!). It works great. Just check out to config ddns on the nas and do port fowarding (on the router) to the nas (in my case, I fowarded all ftp connections on my specific FTP port, wich is listening the NAS, to my NAS. For example the default one is 21). Feel free to PM me for any further instructions or questions.
