FTP not working - ruled out a lot of possibilities
« on: January 01, 2010, 11:00:41 AM »

Issue: The Dlink 323 FTP will not work outside of network

Working: FlashFxp client I can locally connect to the FTP using internal static IP (192.168.1.132)
Not Working: web client will not connect using WAN IP OR DDNS Address (http://www.net2ftp.com/)

Router:
Linksys WRT54GS
Static IP setup
Port forwaring is set up to forward port 21 to the Dlink 323
DDNS set up and working fine
I have tried putting the Dlink 323 in the DMZ
I have tried port forwarding EVERY port to the Dlink 323

Dlink:
Running firmware 1.7
2x1.5tb green WD's in RAID 1
uPNP AV with ps3 successfully working
Mapping of network drives with laptops successfully working
FTP NOT working
BT currently NOT working (port forwarding is set up and using file not URL to load torrent file)

As a test, I installed filezilla FTP server on my laptop and using port 21 and port forwarding on the router, I was able to connect to the filezilla FTP using net2ftp.com using DDNS and WAN IP. I was able to transfer files.

I think I have ruled out the router due to the successful test on my laptop using same port. At least I ruled out my ISP blocking port 21. I have tried restarting both the router and the dlink several times with no change.

I'm out of ideas. Can anyone think of anything else?

Go to ShieldsUp at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and do a port scan.  Tell us what it says for port 21.

Here are the results. Dlink 323 up and ftp turned on. Port forwarding on 21:

GRC Port Authority Report created on UTC: 2010-01-01 at 19:06:21

Results from probe of port: 21

    0 Ports Open
    0 Ports Closed
    1 Ports Stealth
---------------------
    1 Ports Tested

THE PORT tested was found to be: STEALTH.

TruStealth: FAILED - ALL tested ports were STEALTH,
                   - NO unsolicited packets were received,
                   - A PING REPLY (ICMP Echo) WAS RECEIVED.

That suggests the port is not properly forwarded in the router.

Solved the issue. I had the wrong default gateway. I was using 192.168.0.1 when I should have been using 192.168.1.1

I am now able to access the FTP.
