Network Access List Setup.... HELP!!
« on: December 21, 2009, 01:04:47 PM »

I just got my DNS-323 and I am running it on 1.07 firmware. Everything is working great except when I modify my network access list. I created different users and I want to give each user access to specific directories.  I also want those users to share some directories. Pretty basic stuff... the problem that I have is that I can't access the restricted directories with my user name and password. It says that I entered an invalid username or password.

example of my config:
Users:
User 1
User 2
User 3

Network access list:

Share               Path                    User/Group               Comment               Oplocks               Map
Volume_1         Volume_1            ALL                                                       no                       no
Volume_2         Volume_2            User 1                                                   no                       no
Volume_1-1      Volume_2/Share  User 2                                                   no                       no

So if my setup is something like i showed above this will allow all my users to access Volume_1. My problem is when I try and access Volume_2... i enter "User 1" and password and then it asks me which volume I want to mount. I choose Volume_2 and this is where I can't access it. I can access Volume_1 with no problem with this user name and password. Can someone help me figure out what I am doing wrong?!!

Also, as a side question, by default (from XP) the user name is automatically set to "Guest" whenever you access the server. Is there a way to access the server as specific user??

FYI: I have this problem from both XP and OS X. Also, I setup the FTP and it doesnt give me any problems viewing the specified directories.

I'm having similar problems.  I'll admit up front I'm a newbie to networking stuff, so please be patient.

When you go to set up users via the web app, do you create users with existing Windows logon names?  IOWs, when I try to access the network drive from Windows(logged on as the default Win user), I cannot create any folders, because Windows is asking me for the password of 'guest' which is ghosted out.  Why won't it let me change the name to my default Windows logon and provide the password and start adding folders to the NAS drive?  I tried adding my Win logon name as a user to the NAS box, which I successfully done, but then cannot log into the drive from XP.

Help.  Thanks in advance.

You do not have to use Windows login names.

I think this is how you solve your issue: in XP, do not click on the drive under "network places". Instead, in windows explorer ("My Computer"), click Tools, select "Map Network Drive", pick a drive letter that is not is use, click browse, select your desired DNS account (should be displayed) and click ok, you will see below the option to select a username and password. The username and password is the one you set up in the DNS-323's web interface, NOT your windows login. This is how you get around the greyed out guest login problem. Works for me.
