Curious Wireless Problem
« on: January 02, 2010, 09:37:27 PM »

Hello!

I have a DNS-323 on my network, and it works fine expect for one computer, and even then it only gives me trouble over the wireless connection. When the laptop is connected by ethernet cable it works great. I can also access other network shares (while connected through wireless) without any problems.

The computer in question is running Windows 7 64 bit, running on a wireless G network. I recently changed to a new wireless router, which is when the problem started. I'd like to figure this out without buying a new router.

I've tried turning off and on the encryption, changing the channel on the router, turning the home group on and off, everything I could think of... I've run out of ideas.

Can anyone come up with any suggestions? Thanks for any help you can give!

Have you turned off any installed firewall while you're wireless and then try to connect?

Well, changing the channel or encryption isn't going to have anything to do with this issue.

What EXACTLY are the symptoms of the "trouble"?

Yeah, I tried turning the firewall off and on. No joy.  Thanks for your suggestion, though!

The trouble is, simply, connecting to and accessing the files and folders on the DNS 323.  The error messages and symptoms vary. Sometimes I can access some folders but not others, sometimes the shared resources don't even show up in my Network locations. Sometimes it tells me that I don't have the correct permissions to access the files (and sometimes it doesn't), but like I said if I use a wired ethernet connection as opposed to the wireless connection, I can browse all the folders without issue. Which leads me to think it wouldn't be a problem with the permissions. Am I wrong in assuming that?

I have no passwords or special permissions set on the folders on the DNS 323.

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated!

A stupid question, are you SURE you aren't getting connected to a different wireless network some of the time?  All the varying symptoms are certainly odd...

Heh.  It would be hilarious if that was the reason! :)

Yeah, I've only been connecting to our apartment's router. With all my attempts at trouble shooting I'm sure of that.

Some ideas that may be useful:
update wireless drivers on laptop
update firmware in router
have a look at the error log in the router
