Next Generation NAS?
« on: January 12, 2010, 06:07:04 AM »

Does anyone know if D-Link is developing/planning a next generation NAS to succeed the DNS-343?  I'd like to see an affordable higher capacity unit that can compete with Netgear's business class 6-bay ReadyNAS series.

I believe the DNS-343 was released over 1-1/2 years ago, which is long enough to start considering the next step in product development.  Using what they've learned from the release and feedback of the DNS-343, D-Link will hopefully incorporate lessons learned into a next generation device (if they are even considering one).

According quality of firmware, better don't use any D-Link equipment before two years of good customer reports.
For example: Good firmware for my own DSL-2740U released only at end of 2009. (Of course, I bought it after the availability of firmware.)
Only with 343 i'm miss. No bad reports before 1.03, i thinking, device is good, but....
See situation around "Platinum" home gigabit+wireless N router. No working firmware yet. People sell it for 20-30$, for persons who want simple gigabit switch.

Perhaps FW programmers dismissed because their earnings expensive for the company...

I'm going through a similar situation with the Netegear EVA8000 media player.  Great hardware, but really bad firmware.  If not for the beta forums, I don't think the average layperson (even with technical experience) can get the product to work properly.  Two years later and the firmware finally matured to the point where the device works as advertised.  That's the price we pay for early adoption.
