Hoping this forum can help.

I'm trying to connect a laptop to the internet via a DIR-655.

The connection will login (I'm using WEP), but no IP address is assigned. I then get a message that "Windows cannot assign an IP address. Contact the network administrator" or words to that effect.

My PS3 finds the router and connects with no problem.

Any ideas?

Update:

Problem solved.

Under network properties, disable IEEE 802.1x authentication.

If you want N-speeds, use WPA2, not WEP. WEP is a POS encryption and it's easy to crack, and so unreliable that it was taken out of the N-specification, so you will only be able to connect with G speeds if you use WEP.

Nice addition, but you might want to inform if there's a specific reason to use WEP before you try to show off your Wiki knowledge

Says the guy who thinks an MSCE-certification means you know stuff about networking.. Last time I checked, Microsoft didn't make routers, and they teach an MSI-model with FOUR layers instead of seven. Wiki knowledge.. that is so cute how you just learned a new expression.

They call them base stations instead of routers but the functionality is the same.

No, I actually didn't know they made routers or base stations or whatever. I've never seen one in stores or heard about it, but what I do know is that MCSE teaches four layers of the MSI-model. Which is horrible.

Then again, you guys probably both use IE and are not at all bothered by the fact that it took Microsoft up until version 8 of their browser to Support CSS2 standards, and now that everyone else uses CSS3 it will probably take them forever to implement that.. Microsoft just has a horrible record of not following standards, so waving an old MCSE around isn't going to impress, nor convince anyone that you "know your stuff", and therefore have some sort of magic right to tell others they know nothing. This is just a forum, and people will listen to those who seem to make sense, not the ones who suck up to staff and wave certificates around thinking it makes them cool. Look at your karma. You guys are not very popular.

I have heard of the OSI model and its' 7 layers.  Whats the MSI model?
