I just got this router to replace my older one from another brand. The reasons for the replacing it: newer standard, some of the nettops were having issues connecting wirelessly, desire to get WHS to automatically or even manually be able to use Remote Access something that did not seem possibly with the older router.

So far I am disappointed with this router. I am  having issues with it with or without QOS activated. Everything internet related seems slower than under the old router and it seems to introduce a 2+ seconds pause now and then on online game, aion, roblox for the kids etc. Very annoying and in some cases lethal. The nettops are able to connect wirelessly but the WHS issue is still well an issue.

Is the pause/lag a known issue with this router? The modem is an ADSL if that makes any difference.

I might as well start it out; since I know others will ask.

What firmware version do you have?
Since you have ADSL; do you have any password setup requirements that were on the old router?  Can you use a default MTU of 1500 or did you use 1492 on the old one?
Is it just the initial access which is slow, or when you make a speed test somewhere, is that also slow?
Did you swap out only the router, or the router and additional cables as well?

Thanks, the status page indicates Hardware A4, Firmware 1.21.

No password requirements on the old router. The way that the ADSL modem was setup was (back then and the one time in the many years I have had to switch to a new modem) by connecting it directly to one of the computers and doing all the settings including user account and password. Then the modem was disconnected from the one computer and "inserted" into the network. In the current configuration this means plugging it into the internet port of the DIR-655. This is the same way in which it was connected to the Netgear WGT624 (V3.0 I believe it was).

MTU not sure but I do not ever recall having to change anything on the old router, it was simply a plug and play operation. To the best of my knowledge (fuzzy on this because it has been a number of years, but I may try it now if the router gives issues until I find a suitable replacement locally) before the Netgear I was simply plugging the modem's Ethernet cable into one of the ports on a 10/100 and it worked without any issues of course sans the wireless access. But, if you think that this is something that the DIR-655 needs to operate properly then I am willing to change it as needed.

Upon clicking on a web page it seems slow to come up with the initial page. Browsing from there on is so so. Where the issue with the lag/stops/freezes is noticed is with the online games where the "action" freezes for 1-3 seconds.

It was a straight swap operation. Used the old cables, even plugged them on the same ports I was using before. That is, the only things connected to the Netgear were: modem cable, a gigabyte switch on port 2, and a Netgear Powerline Adapter on Port4.

I have the same problem. Websites, downloads... everything will just completely halt for a couple minutes. It happens very often and I'm very frustrated about it.

I keep thinking to myself, how much f***ing money do I have to spend to get something that works as advertised. Especially routers, it seems pretty much all of them are terrible.

And in this case it sounds like the actual firmware which is broken, but who knows. I'd call d-link if I didn't assume they'll do the same to me as everyone else and do nothing other than waste my time.

Islander, it seems like a straightforward swap you made there.  I'm doing some reading on Wikipedia; do you know if you happen to have PPPoA or PPPoE?  Both of these standards require a smaller MTU than the default 1500.  The thing is, why does the D-Link have a problem if you did not have to configure the Netgear with a username and password?

I am not the networking expert here on DSL configurations and one of the other networking guys might have a suggestion for you.  I know there are tricks to check for fragmented packet problems from this article here:

Some people have good luck with version 1.21 and others need to upgrade to the 1.32Beta09 to fix their problems.  I think most people here would agree with me, stick with 1.21 for now unless everything else fails and you have no other choice.  1.21 worked great for me, but I don't have DSL.

I spent almost a year with dropped connection, updating new firmwares trying new beta versions, taking off DNS, firewall, no password, password, mac address..etc doing everything possible to it because I do not like to throw away things.

But this time this is it I just bought a brand new ### ( I am not here to advertised the competition)
and that fixed my connection problems !!!
the DIR 655 is in the recycling bin outside in the cold, sorry buddy

I can finally enjoy my internet !

Thanks to all the people who tried to help me, you are the lucky owners of a working router so hold on to it and never update or change anything to it.

I am not entirely sure what fixed it but this is what I did.

1. I disabled DHCP on the router and was starting to manually configure the network connections on some of the computer and laptops. That made the lag and sticking go away. After doing about half a dozen systems I realized that I still had a dozen more devices (SageTV servers, media extenders, game consoles) to go and decided to check the modem.

2. I checked the modem and it had DHCP on. So I had the bright idea of setting that off to try and set the router's on to on and see if that would fix it. Modem would not be recognized and I lost all internet access.

3. Then I decided to start from scrath and reset my modem to factory default, hook it directly to one of the computers, run the setup and provide the user and password information and I was back online in no time. I left the DHCP on.

4. I then reloaded the virgin setup for the router (although I had made no changes whatsoever besides the mess with turning the DHCP off on the modem. If this did not work my next step was to reset the router to factory default, but it worked. DHCP is on and no issues with lag or the sticking. Webpage speed seems back to normal as well.

Not entirely sure what fixed it as after #4 I was exactly at the spot that I was having the issues at but not complaining!

I've had that kind of troubleshooting work for me too.  You do so many different things trying to narrow it down, you accidentally fix it but don't know what single thing actually did it.  :)

If your modem has DHCP, it generally means it's also a router. It slows things down having two routers in place. It also makes it impossible to get the firewall to operate properly.You need to configure your modem as a bridge and let your DIR-655 be the router. Enabling bridge mode is generally simple. You will log into your DSL modem and enable bridge mode. DHCP will be disabled for the modem once you enable bridge mode. On your D-Link router, reset it to factory defaults and choose PPPOE and enter your DSL user name and password. Disable "DNS relay." It has been known to have issues. I wouldn't disable DHCP on the DIR-655. DHCP works fine on it and makes things alot easier. Also disable dynamic fragmentation or the entire QOS feature. Reboot the modem, then the router then your computer in that order when you have connection issues. Wait a few seconds between each reboot.

What model DSL modem do you have? Who is your Internet provider? They will have instructions posted on how to convert you modem to bridge mode.

I have Windstream DSL and have converted my modem to bridge mode. It works great.
