DNS-321 and torrents?
« on: October 24, 2009, 10:31:34 AM »

I'm trying to decide between a 323 and 321 at the moment.  I know for a fact that the DNS-323 supports BitTorrent downloads.  I can even see how the settings work in the emulator on D-Link's page.

But I'm having a hard time finding information on the 321's capabilities.  Its emulator has no such tab.  I see that firmware revision 1.03 offers "P2P support" via something called Apkg.  I'm not sure what Apkg is, and really P2P could mean anything.

So does the DNS-321 support autonomous BitTorrent downloads?  Out of the box (with latest firmware)?  Or do you need some third party plugin?  I've also seen mention of Transmission and fun_plug.  Are these verified to work with the 321?

Any information is appreciated.

IMO, I'd go for the DNS-323.  It offers somewhat faster file transfers, has the print server function and can also support a UPS USB connection.

Really?  SmallNetBuilder's review actually has it slightly above the 323.

I saw that, but that hasn't been the experience of a number of people here, including me.  I'm speaking of a RAID-1 configuration, which is the only configuration I've tested.  I get about 20-25% faster read/write speeds to the DNS-323.

Interesting.  I'll be running RAID0 if anything, though I'm leaning more toward no raid at all since I'm not too keen on losing all my data if one drive fails.  I'm also not willing to halve my storage for RAID1.

The DNS-321 does support P2P torrent downloading since Firmware 1.03.  It's not in the emulator because the P2P app is an extra add in.  The plugin is located here:

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DNS-321

click "Support Resources" then "Additional Downloads"

Where might one acquire this add-on?  I've been searching this site (and elsewhere) for every iteration of DNS-321, APKG, P2P, etc. that I can think of and coming up empty.

Nevermind on that one.  I finally found the DNS-321 section on the ftp site.  It's buried under "Multimedia" for some reason.

The built-in BT client seems a bit light on settings.  And by a bit I mean a lot light.  Anyone have a walkthrough for installing fun_plug + Transmission on this thing?  Everything I'm finding is aimed at the 323.

If anyone is still interested, this guide walked me through installing Transmission:
http://www.shadowandy.net/2009/01/transmission-142-for-dns-323.htm

The article says it is for the DNS-323 but it worked great on my DNS-321.

If you have not already installed fun_plug, just use the link on that same page for "Running fonz’s fun_plug (0.5) on DNS-323". Keep in mind when editing settings in "settings.json" make sure Transmission is stopped. If not it will overwrite your changes with whatever it had stored in memory. This caused a bit of frustration until I realized it.
