Brand New DNS323 - Disconnects often and very unstable
« on: January 12, 2010, 06:06:30 AM »

Hi,

I bought a brand new DNS323 with two WD Caviar Green drives (Raid 1). I'm finding the unit to be very unstable, it will reboot itself from time to time and when I try to copy over a large volume of data, it will crash. It's becoming very fustrating, and I've lost some data because of this.

I'm copying from a Windows XP PC with a shared drive to the DNS323. I have it on a static IP on my workgroup. It has the latest firmware (1.07) and I have drive hibernation turned off. The reported temp is pretty stable, between 39C and 42C.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks.

Frankly, I'd return it for replacement.  That is not normal behavior.

Does the reboot only occur when you are transferring large volumes of data?

Are you certain that it's rebooting itself and that your problem is not network related - tell us about the network you are transferring the data over.

I have seen a number of instances where network issues can cause the network connection to fail when large volumes of data are being transferred.

Thanks for the responses.

The network is a simple network - a WRT160N to which a PC and the DNS323 are physically connected. There are 3 laptops (2 Windows XP and a MacBook) which connect wirelessly to the WRT160N.

I used to use the PC as a NAS, but decided to go for the DNS323 because of the RAID1. Now i'm just trying to get the data off the PC onto the NAS; they are physically connected throught the router over the 100MB connection.

Also, I've tried a few times to stream a movie from the DNS323, it will work for about 10 minutes and then choke and the NAS will disconnect.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I've noticed it disconnecting from time to time with or without any traffic to the device.

IMO, I'd send it back and get a replacement.

I'm not certain if we have a language issue or a terminology issue here.

The topic says it disconnects, your first post says it reboots and now you're saying disconnects again - to me there is a difference between the two ...

If it's rebooting, you do have a hardware problem and the DNS-323 should be replaced.
If it's disconnecting, you might have a network problem and replacing the DNS-323 might or might not solve that, depending on the actual problem.

Unless the network had problems before the DNS-323 arrived, I'd still have to rate it as the top suspect.  Time to get a replacement is now...

Not necessarily.

I know of quite a few home networks that are used for nothing other than sharing a broadband connection - on such a network, you can have serious network issues, without the user ever being aware of them, and the addition of a NAS, and the subsequent attempts to transfer data locally, which loads the network infrastructure to an extent not previously attempted, are what brings the issues to light.

I won't argue the point since you seem to be so sure it's not the NAS.  For me, a replacement of the very thing that has been changed before the issue surfaced seems pretty logical.  I've made my suggestion, we'll wait to see when it's actually resolved.  ::)

How did that fix the NAS locking up?
