Connection Issues
« on: January 25, 2008, 10:42:31 AM »

I am new to this forum.  I am also not as knowledgeable about computers as most of you seem to be from reading your posts.  With that said, I am in need of help with maintaining internet connections.

I have a pc running Windows Vista.  Recently purchased and I performed all of the current updates on Microsoft's website.  I have a dlink NWW-142 adapter and the wireless router is DIR-615.

What happens is I lose connection after restarting the computer.  This happens both after completely turning it off and after it awakens from hibernation.

I have tried reinstalling the driver software from dlink and sometimes that allows me to reconnect.  Other times I have had to disconnect and reconnect the router and cable modem.  I have also had to reset the router.  Still another time, simply unplugging the NWA from the USB hub and plugging it back in allowed it to reconnect.

Sometimes it says it is connected with limited connectivity.  Other times it seems to be searching in vain for a valid IP address.

I need to get this issue resolved so that it is a reliable connection or my wife is going to kill me.

Any thoughts on what to check first?

Also, I cannot easily move the pc over to where the router is, so all of my computers are wirelessly connected to the router.  As far as a firmware upgrade, there seems to be one available.  Would it help and could I connect with a laptop and get that firmware downloaded?

Thanks!

Yes, I highly suggst upgrading the firmware on that unit asap. That by itself could fix your issue.
Steps for doing this can be found here.

Thanks for the suggestion.  The router seems to be working perfectly now, no loss of connectivity for the past 24 hours.

The DWA-142 adapter is still not working reliably.  I attempted to download a beta driver from the dlink website, but don't know if it 'took'.

I have since uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it.  I have not checked to see if it comes up again after the computer 'wakes up'.

If it is still having issues, what can I try next?

Thanks!

p.s. Windows Vista requested that I put the dlink CD in, it did not have any drivers that would work, so I'm assuming that the driver is the dlink one that comes on the installation CD.

I gave up and returned the DWA-142.  Best Buy did not have any like it, so I purchased one from Netgear.  It is working just fine.  No offense to dlink, but this makes one fried router and one bad adapter in the last year.  I am not saying I won't try dlink again, but I decided to go with Netgear this time.
