Gapless Playback !
« on: September 05, 2008, 01:10:31 PM »

D-Link tells me that the DSM-750 does not support "gapless playback" but this may change with future firmware upgrades.

I'm just posting here to see if this is an important issue for anyone else. Hopefully we can convince them to fix this issue in the next upgrade.

I hope they will consider this issue a priority.  I upgarded from DSM320 so I can start viewing HD.  I have hundred sof videos sorted using folders.  I have split my long movies in to smaller files based on chapters etc, and now I cannot watch them.  This is very silly.  With the DSM320, I was able to press "PLAY" on the folder and all the video files in that folder would start playing in order.  I cannot beilive this simple feature does not work with the DSM 750.  Unless they get this fixed soon, this product will have to go back to the store.  I have spent a couple hours on the phone with DLINK trying to get to someone who knows what I am talking about with no luck.

1. Anyone know if there will be a fix for this soon?
2. Anyone know if the DSM 520 also does this?

In the mean time to get by you can setup a playlist for each movie. For example, the movie "Steal Today Gone Tomorrow, go into WMP11 group all those files into a playlist and call it "Steal Today Gone Tomorrow. Find the playlist (.pls) file and copy it to the same folder with all the movie files for that particular movie. Now, here is the sweat part. If your using an external hhd with your dlink, copy the folder with the movie segments and the .pls file to the external hdd. With your external hdd connected to the dlink, it will see the folder and the .pls file. Select the .pls file and it will start playing the movies in the order you specified when you set up the playlist. If your steaming from WMP11 or any other UPnP server, instead of selecting a movie file, you select the .pls file...and BAM!!!, you have gapless playback.

So there you have it. Gapless playback with a little bit of ingenuity. So DLink, don't be in a rush to add gapless playback directly into the DSM-750. Use some of those saved resources to get the Netflix WatchNow service on the machine.

I was talking about audio files like MP3s & the DSM-750 not supporting "Gapless Playback" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gapless_playback). This has nothing to do with video files or video playback.

This problem was addressed by MAC with the second generation of iPods years ago.

Hopefully D-Link will fix this ASAP.

Thanks,

It has been 5 months now and the new firmware 1.02 does not include this simple upgrade of being able to play Video Files in a folder continuously.  I cannot believe this.  Dlink is really started to get a bad image for me.

Someone at Dlink, please make this happen.  This is ridicules.

From ECF: Yeah that definitely is a feature it should have as the DSM-520 does. I will see about having it added in the next firmware update. Thank you for your input.

Also you can search the forum as a topic has been started already: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=4168.0

Yes, I agree it matters. Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" just doesn't sound right with gaps between the tracks!

For anybody still interested in addressing this issue...

Try using FooBar 2000 and its UPnP plugin; it streams the playback output to UPnP devices and allows players like the DSM-750 to play streams right from the FooBar player.  Because FooBar supports Gapless playback, ReplayGain AND crossfading, all of these effects work on the streamer as well.

Due to D-Link's non-existant support or apparent interest in their customers, I sold my DSM-750 long ago, but I verified that Foobar's UPnP server works as advertised with a WDTV Live... it would be interesting to see how well it works with the Dlink players; it should work for all of them (the 320/520/510 and 750).

Let me know how the 750 works with this... if it works, I may just try to dig another one up; I miss the Extender feature.
