Slow copying to and from DNS-321 hooked up to DIR-655
« on: January 13, 2010, 01:09:10 PM »

I have a D-Link DNS-321 NAS with one 1-GB WD Caviar Green hooked up to a DIR-655 router. When I copy files to and from the NAS drive, throughput is no more than 4 to 5 MB/s, which means that large video files can easily take hours to copy to or from the NAS drive. My throughput is much lower than what other users are reporting on the DNS-321 forum. I'm wondering if there are any configuration settings I could tweak on my DIR-655 router to speed up copying speeds.

Suggestions/thoughts anyone?

Hello,

I'm a new member.  I just registered so I could get the answer to this problem also.  My DNS-321 is pretty slow when connecting to dir-655 also.  I don't know if there are settings that i need to do on DNS-321 and DIR-655 to make it faster.

thanks

I was able to speed up copying to and from my DNS-321 hooked up to a DIR-655 router by using a dedicated gigabit PCI network card (about $30) in my computer rather than the built-in ethernet connector on my motherboard, which turned out to be support 100 mbit max.  I'm now getting 14 to 15 MB/s (as opposed to about 5 MB/s). Still no speed demon, but a definite improvement.

The NAS itself is also a limiting factor. I think it tops at 23 MB/s. You might try setting Jambo frames on the NIC to improve some more.
