Mac address filtering problem.
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:09:53 PM »

Just wondering, but I thought mac address filtering was typically used for wireless only at least it was with my previous router (linksys).  I've been using the mac filtering the last few days because i got tired of typing in passwords and changing it, but it apparently filters your LAN network as well....

The other thing was, I didn't realize there was a limit to the list.  I sort of maxed out and can't add any more lol.

Any suggestions, hints, or opinions?

Thanks.

MAC Address filtering has always worked on both hardwired and wireless machines on all routers I've ever used.

There is a limit to how many MAC Addresses you can put in. This limit is tied to the limit of GameFuel rules, Virtual Servers, custom routes, etc. Basically, all these rules take up space in the routers memory. And you've just run out of memory.

Take a look. You won't be able to add any more gaming rules because you used up your memory on MAC Address filters.

Just put a password on the wireless, clear the MAC Address filter, and be done with it.

I swear in a previous version of the firmware, I was able to filter just my wireless MAC addresses. After updating to 1.32, it apparently went away. However, in the help, it still mentions the ability to filter either wired or wireless, so I think they took this out.

My other routers (Linksys, Netgear, Apple) all had the ability to filter only wireless clients.

I have a lot of machines and devices (like phones), and so this is a problem for me, too. I would prefer to limit access to wireless only, and not worry about the wired connections.

If you want to limit access to wireless clients only, put a password on the wireless connection. Maybe stop broadcasting the SSID as well or instead.

I've often read MAC filtering is pretty easy to get around by cloning a MAC address using wireless, so you may even consider not using it at all.  If someone really wanted to get in that way, they could.  But I guess it keeps honest people honest still.

Yeah, spoofing your MAC Address is very easy to do.

I should also note that there is no point in filtering MAC Addresses on wireless only. A MAC address from a wireless card is just that - from a wireless card. If you plug that same computer into a wired port, it will have a different MAC Address.

I agree. There is no practical use for MAC filtering, as it's trivial to spoof a sniffed MAC Id. I just leave it turned off. Leaves more memory space in the Router for other things...

I do use a "WPA2 Only" PSK which I generate on this page: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

You might even consider generating more than one, and cut and paste to a totally unique string. I do. Changing your PSK at least every six months is a good idea too, just in case.
