Help Please. Can't enable wireless
« on: January 21, 2010, 03:38:08 AM »

I have DIR-655 (Hardware A3, Firmware 1.21 in Australia). For some strange reason I cannot enable wireless. I try to save the config and the router reboots without saving.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi tanstaafl,

I am running the 1.21 in the United States and I have no problems with Wireless. I also have the A3 Revision of the Router. I am using the Firmware version 1.21 with SecureSpot, without Secure Spot being enabled.

You need to click to Save Settings on each page and use Internet Explorer 7 or 8 to make those changes.

You also need to make sure that the Radio / Wireless is on, on the computer itself. Some Laptops, have a button that needs to be pressed to turn on the Wireless Radio.

Thanks all for the suggestions. It was a problem around not being able to save changes (not just wireless). I reloaded V1.21 firmware but this made no difference. I tried reloading an old saved configuration but this made no difference. Finally I restored factory defaults and rebuilt the config from scratch. All is working fine again.

I suspect, from reading earlier posts at this forum, others have gone through this process and it did not work for them. But it may help others.

There was a well known bug in the 1.21 firmware. As long as you did not Disable Wireless you should be fine. As soon as you did, the Cannot Save Settings problem occurred and the only way out of it was to reset the router and rebuild from scratch. I do not know if it effects all hardware versions but have seen it on A4s. I believe that the problem was fixed in the 122b05 firmware.

If you need to disable wireless with the 1.21 firmware version you can use a schedule instead. There are a number of threads on the forum dealing with this exact topic. (These types of known problems should have a sticky since they keep coming up.)

I was not aware this was a known bug. Personally I think confirmed/known bugs should be the obligation of D-Link to publish (as well as any known work-arounds). But in the absence of this it would be nice to have a sticky list of all discovered bugs.

As far as upgrading is concerned, I am pretty sure I read that upgrading to a non-Australian version of firmware would void my warranty. From what I can tell there is no Version available beyond V1.21 at D-Link's Australia web site. Given the bad experiences some at this forum have described, I am reluctant to upgrade to beta versions of software unless it was absolutely necessary.

But thanks again for the information. It helps to know the problem I experienced is a known problem.
