Two Different Hard drives for raid1
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:19:38 PM »

Can I use two different hard drives for a raid1 configuration?  I currently have a Seagate SATA 1tb 32mb cache 7200 rpm.  I want to get a Hitachi that has the same specs.  Will it work fine?

Should be no problem.  I had two different brands of 500g drives in mine with no ill effects.  It's obviously best to use the same make/model of drive, but it worked for me...

Like GRJ said, yes.  If you use two different capacities then you will be able to create a RAID 1 of the lowest capacity drive.  I beleive the extra space is not usable in this situation.

I too was running two 1TB drives, one from WD and the other Samsung (my favorite).  I ended up buying another Samsung drive and the WD is not sitting on a shelf waiting for some other project.

Just something to note, you do not need a fast hard drive for this NAS.  If you are going to buy a new drive specifically for this NAS, buy an ECO drive or something with a slow spin rate, low heat.  This NAS does not benefit from the faster drives due to it's inherently slow electronics.  It's an entry level NAS so I can't complain.
