Problems getting started
« on: January 24, 2010, 09:01:33 AM »

I bought a DNS yesterday and have struggled all evening and this morning getting it set up. I have created 2 users and can access the folder "Volume-1" and the subfolders for each user. I set up passwords however I can open either folder without a password from any computer on my network. Thus I don't think my files are password protected. Haven't gone outside my network yet.

Other issues are:
(1) The easy search utility software doesn't see my 323. I was told that I can configure through the web page but it seems strange to me.
(2) I can't set up a printer; when I search for a printer through the add printers wizard it can't find it. I have been on tech support with 3 different agents for 1-2 hours each. The last one told me there could be a "glitch" and that someone would call back within 48h.

Thought I'd try the forum instead. Could my hardware be defective? Are my expectations unreasonable? Is this too difficult to set up for someone who is not a network professional? Should I return this to the store?
Thanks

Hi there

It's not actually necessary to use any software to setup your NAS (i.e. the Easy Search utility) although it is strange that you are unable to use it and are unable to set up a printer. These two things could indicate a network configuration issue or firewall issue if you are unable to "see it" on your network. However, it seems you are able to see it to access the shares you have created?

Regarding the shares you have created that are password protected, are the usernames and passwords the same as the usernames and passwords you are using to login to your computer? If so, you won't be prompted to login to them.

Thanks for replying. There didn't seem to be a problem seeing it on the network... at first... then I tried to troubleshoot it last night and it didn't show up in my network places. The paaswords are different from the one to log on to the computer. However, even if that were the case I would be expect to be able to access 2 diferent users' folders (with different passwords) at the same time.

I haven't heard from tech support so I'll exchange the unit for another one and if that doesn't work I know the store will take it and the hard drives back and refund my money.

Just answering your questions.

Your hardware does not appear to be defective

No - it is not too difficult to setup for someone who is not a network professional - but it can be challenging for someone who has not dealt with file sharing and security before - this is likely to be the case with any NAS, or for that matter sharing files between Windows systems on a network - if you haven't tried that yet, perhaps you should, getting Windows XP to play in a "pure Windows" network environment can be more difficult than using the DNS-323

The reason why the Easy Search Utility does not find your DNS-323 is most likely that it is blocked by a software firewall or other security suite installed on your computer.

Good luck with the second unit - and good luck with whatever NAS you end up with.

Thanks for the answers. They make sense but I don't always feel comfortable playing with security settings that I don't understand. I have found the tech support seems to keep spinning my wheels. I'll try pointing them in the direction you suggest.

Only reason I took the hardware back is the store said it was worth a try (and it is a store that provides a higher level of service than the big box stores). Haven't got home from work yet to try it out.
Thanks.
