Is my DNS-323 bad?
« on: January 29, 2010, 06:56:25 PM »

Anyone please help.

I purchased the 323 from best buy about 2 weeks ago.  I also purchased two 1.5TB drives from new egg. when i first plugged in the 323 with the drives the bay on the right side was showing an amber light(Unreadable drive from the manual).  i tried switching the drives and the right side was always the one with amber light.  I formatted and set up the 323 with only one drive on the left and it worked just fine, so i knew that the drive worked okay.  i then moved it back to the right hand side.  still couldnt read it.  I called best buy and had them send me another 323 cause i was convinced that the NAS was DOA(well sorta).

I just got my replacement NAS today.  so i proceeded to follow the same steps to format and install and i have the exact same problem with the replacement drive.

Okay so here is my question.  could this be something i am doing wrong?  what is the deal with these NAS drives, are there problems with them like what i am describing?

PLEASE PLEASE help.  any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Okay i left off some info.

I am running 1.07 on the first bad NAS and 1.06 on the second bad NAS.

I have tried using WD15EADS drives in both bays. i have tried a seagate 160GB drive in the left and right side.  In all cases the right side does not work and the left does.

Thanks again.

So you have two dns-323s and three disks, and if I understand you, all three disks work in the left bay of either NAS, and none of them work in the right side bay - is that right?

Both of your DNS-323's are defective - if a disk works in one bay, and not in the other, the problem lies with the NAS itself.

Yes i have 2 DNS-323 and 3 HDs that i have tried.

Yes all 3 work in the left bay and all of them yield an amber light on the right side.

Here is just one additional question.  Is the amber light on a drive a for sure sign of an error or problem?

Does anyone elese have this problem with this device?

The LEDs are software controlled, and I believe someone has written a script that can be used to turn them on and off and change colors at will - however - if you are running a standard, unmodified DNS-323, and you see an amber LED, it is an indication of a problem, and you can further confirm this by placing a single drive in the right slot and trying to use it - my guess is it will not work.
