Drive disappears mid copy
« on: January 18, 2010, 09:34:12 AM »

Hello
I have two Seagate 1.5TB(Model: ST31500541AS) drives.
Setup as individual disk drives

I have noticed a couple of times that one of the drives will just disappear in mid copy giving me and I/O error.
when I go to the drive (left) to see the contents it is totally empty. when I check the other drive (right) contents are still there. So I reboot the NAS by turning it off and on again the drive goes back to normal and al my contents are there.

is it the drive or the NAS that is failing.. running 1.03 Firmware.

My first blush guess would be the drive.  Did you try the SMART diagnostic?  What did it say?

Have you taken it out and connected it to a computer and run the manufacturer diagnostics on it?

the smart said everything was normal. I have run weekly test on it and I get a Pass result..

I have not removed the drive since I need to get store the data currently on the drive somewhere else. and at the moment do not have that luxury.

Hard to say which is failing, that's why I'd try to arrange to do some more through testing on the drive.

OK.. I was able to remove the drive.. I have done all the test on the drive in question. It took about 2 days since a couple of the long test took well over 8 hours. After the test I put the drive back in the NAS and started to copy 345GB back on the drive. It failed within the first 100GB of copy.
I called SeaGate regarding a warranty exchange, but since it passed all the test on their Seatools they stated in must be the NAS..

Here are the results of the SeaTools. .Firmware Revision: CC34
