Very weird problem, please read
« on: February 16, 2010, 08:32:13 AM »

I have a dir-825 router who is connected to a netgear switch, a xtreamer and a qnap nas.
On the switch i connected 3 pc's and a ip-cam.
All devices are connected with new cat6 cables (ready make)

Al the devices getting a ip from the router automatic.

When i reboot the router, lan speed between nas and pc is fine (22500 kbs)
But after a day (or few days) the speed is going down by itself to 800 kbs, just like that.

With that speed i takes forever to copy a dvd from pc to the nas, and streaming to the xtreamer is impossible !

When i reboot the nas, then it is not going any faster, but when i reboot
the router then it is back to full speed (22500)

I tried to reset the router (3x30 secs method) and tried a few (beta) firmwares
No succes !

Is there a setting to make to avoid those speed drops ?

Or is it something that is still not fixed in the firmware ?

Please help me before i set my dlink router on fire :)

Hardware Version: B1
Firmware Version: 2.01EU

I already tried DIR-825_fw_revb_201EUb17_ALL_multi_20091019 and the DIR825B1_FW201WWB03Beta01 with the same result.

I think (hope) it is a setting, but i have no clue where to start .......

Have you disabled DNS relay, and set your WAN port speed to 100mbs?

My wan port is set on 100mbit.
The DNS relay was enebled, i switched it to disabled now.

I rebooted the router again, so we'll have to wait if this was the solution.

ok. so nothing changed when you rebooted the NAS, and because everything went back to normal when you rebooted the router, means that whatever connections were made at that time, were severed. Since there were no changes when just the NAS was disconnected, you may want to look in the direction of the xtreamer and the connections being made to the router. the sole reason for the LAN to be saturated is because something is saturating it. It's up to you to do the investigation since you are the one in the physical location.

Take a look at the active connections on the router, also take note of the statistics page under the lan category. Take a good close look at the packets being sent and received (forget about dropped and error). Refresh the page and note the difference. Then you may want to go to the internet statistics, this will tell you the traffic being passed through the wan port. If you don't have the wan port connected, you won't see anything though. Unfortunately dlink doesn't include adequate traffic analysis on their routers so pin pointing the problem is going to be a little difficult and tedious.

I found out that the connector on the cable that leads to the xtreamer has a loose contact.
I replaced the cable now.

I also switched off the dhcp server in the router en set a ip for each pc and the xtreamer.

When i look into the statistics page, then i see this:

Sent :    70165   Received :    48972
TX Packets Dropped :    0   RX Packets Dropped :    0
Collisions :    0   Errors :    0

Seems ok to me
When i refresh is see:

Sent :    70717   Received :    49247
TX Packets Dropped :    0   RX Packets Dropped :    0
Collisions :    0   Errors :    0

Nothing weird here i think ?

In the internet session statistics i see this:

192.168.0.100:57987   57987   212.54.35.25:53   UDP   -   OUT   28
192.168.0.100:52676   52676   64.147.188.87:80   TCP   TW   OUT   32

And so on ...

sorry. i meant that when you see the slow down, to check the statistics page to get an indication of heavy network traffic. if the difference between the initial and refreshed statistics differe by a great degree, then it may give an indication that a device or user is using all that bandwidth. Usually for the bandwidth to be saturated like that, a fair mount of activity would have to be present.

Other than that, it may be due to link quality or q0s on the WAN port. I would have that turned off if your using the wan as an uplink port to your switch.

Ah okay,

QoS Engine, Automatic Classification, Dynamic Fragmentation,  all on disabled

A few days no problems with the speed, but today the problem was there again.

The router is slowing down the lan-lan connection.

In Status/Statistics is this:

LAN Statistics
Sent :    45753454   Received :    26032128
TX Packets Dropped :    0   RX Packets Dropped :    0
Collisions :    0   Errors :    0

WAN Statistics
Sent :    25716606   Received :    50275111
TX Packets Dropped :    0   RX Packets Dropped :    19
Collisions :    0   Errors : 0

There are a few rx packets dropped but is this the case of my low speed ?

Someone who knows how to solve this problem ?
