Shareport doesn't see my dir-655
« on: January 25, 2010, 08:22:38 PM »

The pop up menu from the icon in the taskbar doesn't show a option for my DIR-655. I have the newest shareport v1.15, and the 1.32na firmware for my router. I've tried reinstalling it multiple times with no luck.
All I'm trying to do is connect a 500GB external HDD. My computer is wired and using win 7 64 ultimate. Also i have norton 2009 internet security. I've tried setting a general rule through norton's firewall and still nothing pops up. even searched through many of the forums with no solid answer. I'm stuck

You are using the wrong version of Shareport. For 1.32na you want 1.10 not 1.15.

**NEVER** give the advice that someone should disable major security features of their computer just to get some application to work.  If security needs to be disabled, the app is not worth it, and I doubt that D-Link would ever release an app that required disabling firewalls/AV or any other security features.  I'm sorry for being blunt, that that is just bad advice.

Plus, I already tried that as a troubleshooting step, as well as several others.  (I used to work in Windows and MSN QA departments, so I have a little clue about how to do testing...)  I've deducted that this is a problem with the 1.32NA firmware, because the **only** way I have found to fix this issue, is to reboot the router.  For some reason, the router will stop recognizing the Shareport device after several hours have passed.  The Shareport utility will often display the device as being available, but will fail to connect.  Other times, it will fail to detect that a device is plugged in, and will display the no devices available.  In both cases, a reboot of the router fixes the problem.

I am not sure why, but if a D-Link tech has specific information snapshots they need, please contact me with the steps and I will perform them and see what we can find.  I would like to use my 1T drive as an iTunes and Kodak repository for my wife and son's computer, but I cannot, if I have to constantly reboot the router before can they link up.

I just upgraded to the 1.33NA firmware an hour ago, and will see what happens overnight, but I can confirm the OP has a legitimate issue with the DIR-655 and 1.32NA firmware.

Sek your problem is wide spread and probably is a firmware problem. I had it but a second flash with 1.32na fixed it for me. For a few months anyway, up until I added a couple of windows 7 PCs and then it started acting up again. I've un-installed Shareport on my windows 7 Pcs and it appears to be working OK again. I say appears because the time it takes to go to the not connecting mode seems to be random. Anyway the OP stated he was using Shareport v1.15 with 1.32na. For the 1.3x firmwares you need Shareport v1.10 not v1.15. The OP has not replied to say if that was a typo or that they tried v1.10 so I don't know what to tell you. I don't think it's the same problem you are having though.

This worked for me

DIR-655 Router with 1.33NA firmware  SharePort 1.1.0r1 Software

Windows 7 64 bit

Login to your router (type 192.168.0.1 in a web browser)

Go to Setup Tab, click USB Settings in left pane
Make sure USB Type is set to Shareport (if not set it and save)

Go to Advanced Tab, click Advanced Network in left pane
Go to bottom and make sure Enable Multicast Stream is checked (if not check and save)
If you had to change it will ask you to reboot, go ahead and let it reboot

Now in windows, click Start, Control Panel, System Security, Windows Firewall
Click Advanced Settings in Left pane
Click Inbound Rules in left pane
There will be 3 rules you need to change
2 are both called SharePort Utility and the 3rd is SXUPTP
Highlight the inbound rule and click properties
Click the Advanced Tab and make sure both public and private boxes are checked
Hit apply and ok
Do this for all 3 rules listed above

Open the SharePort Utility software
Click on the options button (looks like a wrench)
Click on Search for Device Servers Tab
Check the box by Enable Broadcast Addresses
Type 192.168.0.255 and hit add
Hit apply and OK

That should do it, good luck

@sek

it's reasonable to disable software firewalls when trying to get shareport to work, since often times, the software firewalls are creating the problem.  At least it can then be isolated.

Running a software firewall on top of the router firewall is a bit redundant anyway, and only really provides extra protection within the network, as in if some computer already on the network had a virus or someone hacked into your network with a virus or worm, or a friend came over with his infected laptop and got on your network, infecting your computers. If such events seem unlikely in your case, you may not need a software firewall.

Plus, many people having problems on these forums are running multiple software firewalls, either because they don't realize windows firewall is set to run by default when they installed their resource heavy virus software (i.e. norton etc.)  or they think that two is better than one.  You should never run multiple software firewalls, one is plenty.  And there is very good reason not to even run one software firewall, unless you want to constantly be troubleshooting it.  I have disabled my windows firewall completely since I got tired of troubleshooting it and I just don't see what it is really doing for me on top of my router firewall.

Best thing is to get a resource lite virus app and skip the software firewall, unless you just really want it.  Try avira, which has a very good free version.  Nod32 is also very good, but no free version.  I run Nod32 on my main computer, and have installed avira free version on my laptop and it has never caused conflicts with other programs and is very lite, and it's updated daily, often several times daily.  (If your virus protection isn't updated daily, it isn't doing much for you.)  This will save you many headaches.  Maleware infections are probably 90% caused by user activity (**** sites, torrent sites, downloading hacked software, warez) and if you avoid those activities, you are going to be very unlikely to get infected.  The virus software is a last resort for protection. Your behavior is either going to protect your computer or put you at risk.

I have solved this issue by making sure that both clock are in sync.

Login to your DIR-655 and set the time using a Network Time server ( in canada the National Research Council is the official times keeper time.nrc.ca )

Do the same with your computer in date & times setting.

Once they are set, restat the dir-655 and your computer.

They should connect easily from now on.
