1.09 Beta 1 usability feature request
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:52:20 AM »

Hi there,

A feature request, or two, for the online backup application.

1) It would improve the usability of the application if the user could see the current (and/or average) upload/download speed of the backup/restore in progress. Case in point; I almost despaired with the upload speed until I worked out the math and noticed that it was actually about 2/3 of my adsl upstream speed.

2) A "time remaining" counter would also be very helpful, especially in planning those really long first backups.

Hmm,

I just noticed that the "Limit outgoing bandwidth to" functionality used KB/second (KiloBytes) as its unit, just as the ftp server flow control. At the same time my adsl modem uses Kb/second (Kilobits). This means that there is a factor of 8 difference in these units, which might confuse quite a few people trying to set a suitable bandwidth limit. Maybe the severity of the issue boils down to "How network savvy does Dlink assume the users of this function are", as this issue is present almost universally. Maybe a note about this in the sidebar help would be sufficient?

Anyway, the units used should at least be consistent within the application (whole dns-323 box in this case). This, at least, seems to be ok.

I'll continue listing usability improvement ideas in this thread:

Add option for 24h time format in the "Backup only between x-y". Also make the time fields more precise or free form... half an hour increments are probably acceptable but freely chosen times would be better (would need input checking, of course)

Adding two pretty obvious ones to the list:

When you are backing up multiple folders the interface lets you only remove the last one, not any folder in the middle of the list

Also noticed that the KB/s amount in the bandwidth cap box is no longer visible after setting a bandwidth cap, saving, logging out and logging back in. The checkbox is still checked though.

and another one,

During this "first-backup-multi-day-upload" marathon I have begun to crave an option to time the bandwidth cap, i.e some way to set a bandwidth cap during those hours that we usually use the 'net for other stuff whilst automatically dropping the cap for the night.
