Computers loose internet past DIR-825
« on: December 09, 2009, 08:37:05 PM »

Wondering if anyone else has run into this yet. Browsing the internet, when all of a sudden all the computers on the network loose the connection to the internet, both wired and wireless. I logged into the router, and checked the connection status and I show an active and valid connection to the WAN, although when I checked the statistics page, the WAN is dropping recieved packets.

I released the DHCP connection and renewed, with no effect. Next, re-booted the router, with once again no change. On a whim, I put my desktop connection into the DMZ on the router, and instantly not only does my desktop re-connect to the internet, but so do all the other computers still behind the firewall. I removed the desktop from the DMZ back behind the firewall and everything is back to normal.

Here's my configuration. 2 Desktop computers (one XP Home edition, one Vista 64bit) and 2 Laptop computers (one XP Home, one Windows 7 Home Premium), and an Xbox 360. All systems are fully up to date with all patches and service packs, and the Vista machine was the one used briefly in the DMZ. Laptops are usually connected via wireless, with all others hardwired only.

If anyone has a clue as to what is causing this, I'd love to know. My dad is not as educated as myself or my brother are with computers (he admits to being technically challenged with this sort of thing) and if this were to happen when I'm not home I know this will just frustrate him. The router ran for almost 11 days before this occurred, for your information. Thanks in advance for your help.

I own the Dir-825, hardware version A. When I got the item with firmware 1.01, connections dropped tremendously. I upgraded to firmware 1.11NA so as to solve the problem but this made it even worse. Connections dropped even more and other persons were complaining since they also shared the internet connection via the router. I always had to keep on physically powering off the router and plugging it back on. It got so bad that I installed an electrical switch on the plug that connected the router to an electrical outlet. So instead of pulling out the router's charger and then plugging it back on so as to reboot the router, I could now switch off the power supply.

However it has been a week and a half thus far and I have not had to reset the router. This is of course a world record for me since I had to reset this router every 2 days or so. I'm not sure if it's a fluke or what but I'll tell you what I did. I first saved the router settings to my hard drive. Then I upgraded the router's firmware to version 1.12NA. Then I upgraded to firmware version to 1.13NA right after.I then reloaded the router's settings that I saved on my hard drive. In the advanced tab of the router's webpage I went into the Qos settings. I unticked "Automatic Upload Speed" and I set the manual uplink speed to 360 kbps. My acutal uplink speed is 256 kbps but I just set the uplink a little higher to see what would be the effect. Thus far there has been no ill effect of doing such. In the end the router has not dropped connections or stopped being accessible via it's webpage. And the computers don't loose internet connection.

However I don't know if things will go worse in the third week or so. I'll see and hopefully post an update.
I've given up on shareport since my main issue was the router dropping connections and being inaccessible via it's webpage.

Someone needs to bring out the ban hammer on terrydiehard for cross posting in every discussion.

Well, I forgot to post here, I solved the problem about 2 months ago.... Fixed it by pulling it entirely, did a factory reset, then replaced the whole thing with a Netgear WNDR3700. Haven't had a problem at all in over 75 days.

Everyone,  the dir-825 is broken.  There are several fixes they suggest, for some it works, for most it doesn't.  It's ridiculous that they haven't fixed this yet.  They are going to lose a lot of business from this.  D Link use to be a great company with great products, I'm not so sure now.

I have wasted several hours trying to fix this router, and I am very frustrated.  Seems like a lot of people are.

I'm returning my router and getting a new one, sounds like the Netgear router is a good one without all the hassle. Good luck everyone.
