Drive capacity wrong: 320GB, 85GB used, 10GB available???
« on: June 27, 2009, 12:04:51 PM »

New DNS-323, two identical 320GB hard drives. I have about 85GB used (checked folders using Windows Commander), but drive shows just 10GB available. I first noticed this situation when backups failed due to inadequate space, but I felt that I had used only a small portion of the drive.

There is one hidden file for which I cannot determine the space used - it is named _systemfile.

I checked the space available from the software supplied with the drive, and it also reports just 10GB available. I tried rebooting, but it did not help.

Why do I have so little space left, when I have used only a small % of the drive's capacity?

I remember seen this under Windows 95/98 (Windows problems only).

What OS are you using ?
I have a 320 Go and 500 Go drive, and they show the proper size under XP and Vista.

I suspect you are using an older OS that have these limitation with size...

Another Question : Windows Commander, version compatible 2000/XP,... and more, ore only Windows 3.11,95,98 version ?

The computer that I installed the DLink software from, which I normally use to access the DLink drive, is running Windows Vista Ultimate, 32-bit. I was Using WC version 7.4x, but after reading your post I installed WC 7.5 Beta 6 and got the same result.

I have seven folders on the drive, with the following space occupied:

10
8
47
7
7
1
1
TOTAL: 81GB

The 47GB folder contains about 68,000 files. I recall many years ago having a similar problem, which was caused by the minimum file size. In that instance, a one byte file took up several thousand KB. However, I do not think that is the problem here, at least not according to WC, which I have used for a long, long time with excellent results. BTW, I have WC set to disclose hidden files, and do think a hidden file is causing the space usage.

Any other ideas??

Quick question,

Using windows explorer and do a right click on the folder and select Proprties
You should see 2 "Size" lines
Size = is the actual file size
Size on disk = is the physical size the files are taking up

usualy the "Size on disk" it always bigger that the "size"
The reson behing the way your hard drive is formated, more precisely the cluster size.

For example if you have a cluster size of 1024 bytes, and are saving a file of 20 bytes.....
that file will actualy take 1024 bytes of space on your hard drive....
Since a cluster CAN NOT be used byt more than 1 file at a time....

Same thing if the file size is 1025 bytes.... itwill take 2048 Bytes of physical space.

Windows reports 77GB used, and about 78 space used - roughly the same figures. At this point, I have just one half GB available out of a total of 320GB. I am going to try to reach DLink tech support later today. I am fresh out of ideas.

What does the device UI show in terms of space used on the status page?

I have tracked down the problem, but have no solution...

I'm backing up three PC's running Vista, using Vista's built in backup program. The Folders created by the backup program are not accessible on the Dlink drive. I have tried every conceivable method, and my access is still denied. I cannot even tell how much space I am using up, as the used space is not available.  I do suspect that this is where my hard drive space is disappearing.

Interestingly, before I received the DLink, I backed up these three computers to a spare server, using the exact same backup program. I can access the Folders on the spare server easily, while the same folders on the DLink are not accessible.

This evening, I spent about two hours on the phone with DLink tech support. I started at ground level, was escalated to a second tier support tech, then was supposed to be connected to a product specialist. While I was on hold for the product specialist, I received a message stating that the office is closed and I would have to call back some other time!

Frankly, I doubt that even the product specialist will be able to help, as this is a very peculiar problem. I would be tempted to blame it on Windows, except for the fact that I can access the backup Folders no problem when they reside on a server hard drive, but not when they are on the DLink. As the DLink is the only obvious variable, I think it is their issue.
