Need Help with XBL
« on: February 26, 2010, 08:20:09 AM »

Hello,  I would like to first start out by saying that I have been reading this forum for a few weeks now trying to get my 4500 to work correctly.  I am using a wired connection to my Xbox, and I have tried using FurryNutz's setup (per the sticky) along with many other things.

My router is an A2 that shipped with FW 1.14.  With this firmware, I was unable to use any gaming rules if I wanted to connect to Xbox Live.  Since I had read such good things about FW 1.15, I upgraded to that.  I was now able to use gaming rules and connect to XBL, but when playing certain games I would essentially just lag out.  After growing tired of dealing with random dropouts, I then upgraded to 1.22NA.  This really changed nothing as to what was already going on.

I am at a loss for what is causing my problem, because even when the Xbox locks up and boots me off of live I can still get on my computer and get on the internet with no problem.  I thought that it might be my Xbox, so I grabbed my spare 360; hooked it up; played a game or two and ran into the same problem.  I am using all manual configurations for the IP and DNS servers.  My modem is working correctly, but for some reason my Xbox (both of them) really dislike this router.

I really would appreciate any insight and if more information that I might have left out is needed please let me know.  My wife is really busting my chops about buying an expensive (at least it is to her) and not having it work right.  Thanks in avance

What game are you playing that you see the most lag out issue. I am currently playing MW2 and see this occurrence all the time. I played last night and got lagged out towards the end of the game and sometimes even during match matching process.

What ISP service do you use? DSL or CABLE. We have seen some issues with DSL. Look for ATT DSL posting here that I help my buddy resolve if you use DSL.

One thing you can try, Remove the Gaming rule for XBL to your xbox. Realizing this rule is not really needed for consoles since consoles don't host as PCs do for gaming. I'm going to edit this in the sticky. I also need to add in and mention the UPNP enable option. Make sure this enabled on your 4500 as well. Other then that, I have seen lagging issues and seems to be mostly a XBL server issue. There's not a lot we can do on our end to prevent those issues from happening on there servers. Only thing we can do is to ensure that our systems are set up well and connected to our ISP's correctly. Let us know what else you might be seeing.

Yes, MW2 has been the game that is the most problematic.  I am using Cable internet with Mediacom as the ISP provider.  I have contacted the ISP and have gone over a few things.  I can game fine if I connect directly to the modem and bypass the router, so I know where my problem lies.

I do have UPNP enabled so that should help.  I am just curious as to how you drop out of a match.  Usually when I get kicked out of the game it is because I have gotten booted from XBL.  And it usually boils down to a DNS server problem.  So I will try these things out and see what happens.

Thanks for the response.

Are the primary and 2ndary DNS server IP addressed filled in in the Basic/Internet/Manual section? I also have Cable ISP and had to enter in these IP addresses from the WAN section under Device Info/Status. I to have been booted from the game and during match making before the game starts. I really feel this is a XBL server issue as my other buddies experience this some with a 4500 and some with different HW.

Ya you could try the DMZ however I would only use that as a test. I recommend not using the DMZ full time. I don't use the DMZ and most other people I've helped on here and other places don't use the DMZ. I think if you use the DMZ you don't get the GameFuel processing features. Let us know how the test goes.

If it does not support gamefuel why in the logs does it come up to whatever you set it as? I am in the dmz when using live and my logs show I have 1 priority... Meaning gamefull is working (right?).

Info about DMZ:

DMZ means "Demilitarized Zone." If an application has trouble working from behind the router, you can expose one computer to the Internet and run the application on that computer.

When a LAN host is configured as a DMZ host, it becomes the destination for all incoming packets that do not match some other incoming session or rule. If any other ingress rule is in place, that will be used instead of sending packets to the DMZ host; so, an active session, virtual server, active port trigger, or Gaming rule will take priority over sending a packet to the DMZ host. (The DMZ policy resembles a default Gaming rule that forwards every port that is not specifically sent anywhere else.)

The router provides only limited firewall protection for the DMZ host. The router does not forward a TCP packet that does not match an active DMZ session, unless it is a connection establishment packet (SYN). Except for this limited protection, the DMZ host is effectively "outside the firewall". Anyone considering using a DMZ host should also consider running a firewall on that DMZ host system to provide additional protection.

Packets received by the DMZ host have their IP addresses translated from the WAN-side IP address of the router to the LAN-side IP address of the DMZ host. However, port numbers are not translated; so applications on the DMZ host can depend on specific port numbers.

The DMZ capability is just one of several means for allowing incoming requests that might appear unsolicited to the NAT. In general, the DMZ host should be used only if there are no other alternatives, because it is much more exposed to cyberattacks than any other system on the LAN. Thought should be given to using other configurations instead: a virtual server, a Gaming rule, or a port trigger. Virtual servers open one port for incoming sessions bound for a specific application (and also allow port redirection and the use of ALGs). Gaming is rather like a selective DMZ, where incoming traffic targeted at one or more ports is forwarded to a specific LAN host (thereby not exposing as many ports as a DMZ host). Port triggering is a special form of Gaming, which is activated by outgoing traffic, and for which ports are only forwarded while the trigger is active.

Few applications truly require the use of the DMZ host. Following are examples of when a DMZ host might be required:

        * A host needs to support several applications that might use overlapping ingress ports such that two Gaming rules cannot be used because they would potentially be in conflict.
        * To handle incoming connections that use a protocol other than ICMP, TCP, UDP, and IGMP (also GRE and ESP, when these protocols are enabled by the PPTP and IPSec ALGs ).

    Enable DMZ

Note: Putting a computer in the DMZ may expose that computer to a variety of security risks. Use of this option is only recommended as a last resort.
    DMZ IP Address
Specify the LAN IP address of the LAN computer that you want to have unrestricted Internet communication. If this computer obtains its address Automatically using DHCP, then you may want to make a static reservation on the Setup / Network Settings page so that the IP address of the DMZ computer does not change.

So this may or may not clear your problem.
Like I said before, I've been playing MW2 and HALO series for a long time and I still see lag and lag outs. I've set up my network as best and clean as possible. I still see crap coming from the XBL servers and other people playing. I played most of the day yesterday and saw several games that the servers had to find a new host. Wasn't anything on my side.

I have two Xbox 360s and we have no problems playing MW2 on XBL at the same time.  My router is hardware version A2 with 1.15 firmware.  I have uPNP and dynamic fragmentation turned off.  Both connections are wired.  My Xbox are not manually configured.  The router had DHCP turned on and once it assigned the two ips to the consoles, I added the 2 ips to the dHCP reserved list.  I heard when manually assigning IPs to a device that it has a negative impact on uPNP.

Try this:
1 set the xbox from manual network configuration to automatic
2 make sure uPNP and dynamic fragmentation are turned off
3 remove all game rules & gamefuel entries.
4 reboot the router
5 reboot the consoles

try it to see of the problem goes away.  if it did and you want different IPs for your consoles go into the dhcp reservation list and edit the assigned IPs.  You may have to reboot the router and consoles for the change to take effect.
