DIR-655, HW Ver A4, FW Ver 1.32NA
No problem with normal connectivity.  However, every day when I connect to my company via VPN, I get disconnected after about 2 min on the first 3-4 attempts before I'm able to stay connected for a 24 hour period.  After the 2-3 minutes, I receive the "Error 412:  The Remote peer is no longer responding."  My connection is hardwire, not wireless.  I do not have this problem when connecting from other locations.
Any suggestions?

I have the same issue and have not been able to solve this.

We are currently using this router in our office.  All of us VPNs to our colo and if we don't actively use the VPN connection it'll just "die".  It doesn't disconnect you, it simply stops responding and I would have to disconnect and reconnect.

To temporarily solve this we would leave a command prompt window open to continuously ping a server across the VPN to keep the session alive.  I've tried the suggested solution of unchecking the ALG configuration but only 1 person is allowed to connect to the VPN server.  All the settings are pretty much default except for the internet and wi-fi.

One of my co-worker have this router at home and he told me the same thing happens to him when I asked him about it.

I thought about upgrading the firmware but it looks like the issue still exists.  Looking at the log when one of my co-workers got "kicked off" the VPN I saw this error message, Dropped GRE packet from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy as unable handle packet header.  My DI-624 at home doesn't do this and is the most solid router I've own.

So I tried adding an Application Rule to trigger VPN port but that end up having conflict with the ALG.  After I let my VPN idle and disconnect, I was not able to reconnect until I disable the rule.  In the log it says PPTP ALG rejected packet from 192.168.0.100:63045 to yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:1723.

You may also want to check your power management.
If you use Vista or XP, open the device manager and check the properties of your LAN card (or wireless card).



If you are using wireless connections, in addition set the adapter to "CAM", "Allways On" or "highest performance" (Intel)

Using DIR-655 Rev A2 (FW: 1.32NA) here with up to 5 Cisco clients without loosing connections.

Be sure to use the cisco client in UDP Mode with the router if there is more than one connection.
Always use the latest client version, at least for vista clients.

I tried ALG for PPTP check and uncheck.  The only difference is that when it's unchecked only 1 person can connect to the VPN server.

You may also want to check your power management.

The NIC settings are fine.  Our previous network setup never had this issue before.  I use my laptop at work and at home, my VPN connection stays alive at home (with DI-624 router) no matter how long it's been idle.  Our VPN server is not Cisco based.

Nothing has been changed at the VPN side either.  We can access the Internet all day just fine but it's just that if the VPN connection has been idle it'll die.  You'll have to disconnect from the VPN then reconnect to access anything across the VPN.

It's true that unchecking PPTP under ALG Configuration does make the VPN connection more stable.  But at the cost of only 1 connection can be established to the VPN server.

Right now I'm connected for 18 mins and that's a record, I usually get dropped within a minute after being idle.

some might suggest you return/replace your DIR-655 and use one that has a different (older) FW like 1.21

I have FW 1.21 and it performs great with everything else except the VPN part.  My guess is their ALG feature is junk.  Anyways the permanent solution to this problem is to get another router and save yourself the trouble, I returned mine.
