Pink panel lights after 1.08 upgrade
« on: February 22, 2010, 10:54:25 PM »

I'm pretty conservative so I held off trying the 1.08 beta until the official release, but had an immediate issue that might be informative for anyone else who might encounter a similar problem.

I've been running 1.06 successfully in a RAID 1 configuration for over a year, using a matched pair of Hitachi HDS725050KLA360 500 GB drives at about 60% capacity.

After upgrading to the 1.08 firmware, everything looked ok at first.  I was even able to install the new BT and Firefly add-ons.  But about 15 minutes after restarting both front panel drive LEDs turned pink.  Drive mapping stopped working, but the web UI was still operative.  The add-ons were no longer listed, and the activity log said that both drives had were "removed".  I reset to factory settings and rebooted.  Again, everything was good for about 15 minutes, at which point both panel LEDs turned pink, and the log indicated that both drives were "removed".

I tried disabling the add-ons, etc. but each test cycle was the same: everything ok for 15 minutes, then both drives indicating they had been "removed" in the log.  Eventually, I discovered a common phenomenon: the problem appeared to happen during UPnP scanning after exactly 11% of the file progress had been made.  Each time the disks were automatically "removed", I checked the UPnP scan progress and it had stopped at 11%.

Fortunately, the 15 operative minutes after a reboot is enough time to re-flash back to 1.06, so I rolled back the firmware and now everything is ok again.  Go figure.

I am glad I am not alone in this...

Problem description:
---------------------
0. Started with DNS-323 with firmware version 1.06 (all is well still :-))
1. On a MS Windows XP machine, drive Z was SUCCESSFULLY mapped to \\192.168.1.9\Volume_1
2. Upgraded DNS-323 firmware to 1.07:
3. device powers on with left and right LEDs BLUE.
4. left LED is is flashing fast BLUE. Right LED is solid BLUE.
5. During this time drive Z:\ can be accessed SUCCESSFULLY.This continues for approx. 10 minutes.
6. BOTH LEDs turn solid purple/pink
7. Selecting Z:\ in Windows Explorer results in error message:
"Z:\ is not accessible. Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because machines is unavailable, or access has been denied."
8. In windows explorer, disconnected drive Z:
9. Attempting to map the drive results in error message:"... the network path \\192.168.1.9\Volume_1 could not be found."
10. At this point I can no longer access over 400GB of my data for more then approx. 10 minutes (this device was supposed to be "the backup"!!!)
11. Rebooted DNS-323 multiple times. Every time steps 3 to 9 are the same.
12. Upgraded firmware to 1.08 and rebooted. Every time steps 3 to 9 are the same.
13. Opened a ticket with DLINK support.
14. DLINK support emailed me back asking for information from my original receipt (the search for my receipt is ON... :-(  )

Solution/How to Solve Pink Lights on DNS-323:
---------------------------------------------
(...continued)

15. revert to firmware version 1.07
16. No MORE PINK LIGHTS. BOTH DRIVE STATUS LIGHTS ARE SOLID BLUE AGAIN PERMANENTLY. I can also map  drives to the DNS-323 share.  (All is good again :-) )

Grrrr.  I'm pretty sure 1.08 cooked one of my drives.  The temps were running 15-20 F higher with the latest firmware vs 1.05.  WTF?  First I got the pink lights, then I got a failure email.  Bang, shut the thing off and frantically back up what's on the one remaining good drive!  (Yes I know I have a crappy backup scheme).  But man, I've come to expect absolute crap from Dlink when it comes to upgrades.  The recent Dir-655 upgrade fiasco really has their reputation in the toilet in my book.

what's the meaning of the pink lights, anyway? I just noticed that both my dns-323's hd icons are now pink, but the middle activity light is still blue.

It just finished a number of scheduled downloads... Temp is 104º - no change there.

Do they have any useful meaning? Is my nas about to explode???
