Any way to retrieve data?

So after some trouble shooting and HDD swapping between my (2) DNS-321's I narrowed the problem down to a 1TB WD HDD.  I left the troublesome drive in a NAS last night and finally the center light quit blinking (above network connection light).  This took about an hour.  When I clicked on the NAS it showed only the 1.5 TB drive that I knew was working just fine.  I went to the NAS web page and upgraded firmware..  No change.  I've swapped bays and same thing, only one drive shows up.

I ran the SMART check on the drives and the 1.5 TB checked fine but the other drive (1TB) hangs on 90%. 

In the status it shows both drives, serial numbers, and space available and space used.

It prompted me to format the 1TB drive when I did a reboot, so I clicked ok.  It failed to format.  I tried again and got the same error. 


So my question is..  Any way to retrieve my data using a PC?

Any ideas?  I do have backup copies between my bro and dad, so I can get it back, but figuring out what I lost is going to take a long time.

How were the two formatted?  If they were separate volumes, the data on the one should be available.

In the NAS when it was working, I had volume 1 (1TB) and volume 2 (1.5 TB).  How should the data be available?  When I boot the 1TB drive in either of my DNS-321 it will not show the volume of the HDD that is causing trouble, but does show under the status tab the size, brand, serial number and size.

I'm confused.  Which drive has the data that you're trying to access, the one that failed, or the one that's still working?

I have a NAS with 2 HDD's in it.  A 1.5 TB drive and a 1 TB drive.  The 1.5 TB shows up as volume one and I can access all files on it.  Volume 2 does not show up when I click on the workgroup NAS.  In the device homepage (IP address), I can see volume 2 under the status tab.  I can run a SMART check on volume 2 and it hangs at 90%.  I can not format volume 2.  I can see the size of volume 2 as well as what space is available.  It was working 3 days ago.  I moved the NAS and now the dang volume quit working.

I'll give you all of the info you want just ask questions please.

The 1.0 TB is the problem.  Since you already tried to format this, one can assume that you don't have any files you still need on this one, right?

How about removing that drive and testing it connected to a computer with the disk manufacturer's diagnostics?  That would be my first move.

Yes, the 1.5TB is fine.

I would like to be able to see the files on the 1.0 TB and possibly retrieve them.  The drive is removed.  The 1.0 TB is under warranty (WD).  I already sent for a new one to replace this problem drive.  But in the meantime, I would like to see what I can do with it.

I was thinking about loading Unbutu and seeing if I could see the files in that??  Would that work?  Any way to access a EXT2 formatted drive in Windows Vista?

Do a search for Windows ext2 in Google, there are several EXT2 driver packages for Windows.

I found 2 drivers.  I downloaded them, stuck them on the flash drive and I'll try it as soon as I get home.  Otherwise, my bro can have at it.  I have 30 days to send it back to WD.  He's kind of linux guru.

My bro got me a list of the movies off of the HDD using Linux.  I think I may be able to format my new HDD using the NAS, then place the problem HDD in a PC along with the new freshly formatted drive and copy over from HDD to HDD.  THen, cross the fingers and pray to the movie gods that my NAS will recognize the new drive.

I'd format the drive in the NAS, then connect it to the Linux system to move the data to it.

All is well now.  Linux was able to access the ext2 format and see the movies that my NAS would not recognize.  I formatted my warranty replacement HDD from WD in the NAS, then had my bro use linux to copy from the old to the new and wahhhlahhh..  Put the new HDD in the NAS and all is well now.  168 HD movies.
