New 2TB drives - 1.03 firmware - cannot format
« on: April 29, 2010, 05:53:49 PM »

So, we bought a DNS-321 and two 2TB Hitachi drives. I upgraded the firmward to 1.03, which claims support of 2TB drives. But I cannot get the thing to format them! I am trying to do a Raid 0, but it's hanging at 12 or 13% with an Error code:114.  Any suggestions? Ideas? I've plugged the drives into my Win7 box and cleared out the partitions after the first error, but I'm getting the same thing again. These were brand new drives.

Run the Hitachi drive fitness test and do a full diagnostic on the drives, make sure there's nothing wrong with the drives first.

Done. The drive appear to be fully functional. I'm even able to format them and see them properly from within my Win7 box. It's just the DLink that doesn't seem to like them. :/

Did you do a factory reset of the box and a manual reconfiguration?

Hrm... it looks like Firmware 1.03 is the culprit. I downgraded to 1.02 and am formatting as JBOD.. it's at 32% right now. Odd.

Just a note, you should ALWAYS reset to defaults and reconfigure for a new firmware version.  This seems especially true of this box, many issues seem to be resolved by knocking it flag and reconfiguring manually.

Good to know, thanks a bunch.

I really assumed we'd be able to just pop in the drives and go! Silly me.

Firmware updates are always an issue, and I suspect that the mapping of stored parameters may change between versions.  I know that a factory reset cures a lot of ills for this box, and many issues are resolved by that simple step.
