SharePort problems
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:14:21 AM »

After reading thru a few of these threads, I relieved to see that I'm not the only one with problems.  I have talked to D-Link, and have not come to a reasonable solution.  "Uninstall, then reinstall the SharePort Utility."  Didn't work.

Here's my story: I have the DIR-825 Router, H/W Ver A1, F/W 1.01, SharePort Ver 1.14, and I have a Western Digital External Hard Drive connected to the USB on the router.  There is a desktop running XP hard wired to the router (which is rarely used), and a laptop with Vista 64-bit connected wireless.  Normally, the SharePort Utility would recognize and connect with the hard drive OK, but whenever I tried to transfer a large amount of data, such as a folder full of pictures, or when the laptop would perform its automatic backup, the router would disconnect the hard drive, as well as my wireless connection to the laptop, after just a couple of minutes, right in the middle of the data transfer.  The wireless connection would eventually restore itself, but the SharePort would no longer see the hard drive.  I would have to disconnect power to the hard drive, and reset the router, to re-establish a connection.  Sometimes, I would even have to restart the laptop.  This would get VERY frusterating.

So, today, I installed Windows 7, and afterwards, I had to remove the SharePort Utility because of a problem with the driver.  I go onto D-Link's website to re-download it, and found out that Ver 3.0 is the only one I could find.  Installed it, and now NOTHING.  I ended up updating the firmware of the router with 1.13NA.  Had to reconfigure the entire router, using some of the suggested settings that I read about here. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was able to connect to my hard drive immediately.

So far, so good, but time will tell.  I will certaintly update if I have further problems.  I do agree that we should not be having to deal with these problems, and that D-Link should be able to come up with a solid fix ...

Nevermind.  The SharePort is a POS.  4 different attempts at backing up my laptop to the external hard drive, and each time it disconnects about 1/2 hour in.  Have to reset the router to connect again, but there's no point, because it still won't complete the task without further disconnections.  Bummer.  Wouldn't think it should be too hard for D-Link to figure out .

I have a DIR-825 and when I connect a USB device, my router don't even detect it.  The sahere utility was the only argument to buy that particular router and I can't use it...
