Modem Cable Wan Problem
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:54:56 PM »

I have a DGL-4500 router.  We had about 1 laptop using it wirelessly on an unsecured network.  Last night, we tried to change the settings to WPA-encrypted, but after we enabled WPA the internet stopped working.  All of us had full signal strength from the router and could connect onto the network, but there was no internet.  I then noticed that the router itself was not connected to the internet or modem on the 192.168.0.1 site it said DISCONNECTED under WAN with no IP address. I have reset Cable modem, reset router and WAN said DISCONNECTED all time, I don’t receive any IP. I change cable no change.
We've tried power-cycling the modem and router, resetting the router alone while reconfiguring an unsecured connection. I have updated the firmware to 1.22NA.
Also, yes, the modem is working.  I can directly connect pc into the modem for internet and work fine. If I connect the router via DHCP in my business place, WAN is Connect fine. I have no idea why in my Modem Cable in home I don’t WORK!!!!!!!!

double check all the connections and settings? If your not getting any WAN IP address means either the cable is bad, not connected or not getting any IP address from the cable modem or ISP. The WAN IP address should be a 2 digit beginning address, ##.###.###.### and not a 192.168.#.# address, that should be on the LAN side. If the 4500 is working at ur busness and not the home, then it could be cabling or the back end of the cable modem is not working any more possibly. You've verified that the router is working at work, something between the cable modem and the router is causing the issue. Make sure the cable coming from the cable modem is connected into the single port WAN/Internet port on the router and not one of the LAN ports by accident. Let us know how it goes.

Few questions:

1. You changed it from what to WPA? WEP? Unsecured?
2. What does your total network consist of. So far we know: Modem, DGL-4500, and laptop. Is there other equipment?
3. Where did it say "Disconnected"? Under Cable status or Network status? If the former, that isolates it to a bad ethernet, modem port, router port, or duplex. If the later, see next item.
4. Isolate the problem. Bypass the router, go direct from computer to modem and power cycle modem. Look at your network connection. Is it media state disconnect or "A network cable is unplugged"? If so, either bad ethernet or port on CM.
5. Swap to a different ethernet, if still "network cable is unplugged" call your ISP.
6. Also make sure your not using USB and Ethernet from the modem. Sometimes the modem will shut down the ethernet port if it thinks your using USB.

Good luck.

Glad you got it fixed. Odd that the router was the problem however could have been HW or Configuration. Hope the new one works well. I would set up wireless for WPA2 so your secured. CHeck out the Gaming and GameFuel sticky. You don't have to them however some of the additional options and settings will help streamline the 4500. Hope you have a good week.
