Ok before I get flamed about the whole Windows 7 Starter, let me say this.

I have two windows 7 starter laptops, these are for my 12 and 13 year old kids, as they don't need anything fancy, they are for doing their homework, Report writing and such... as well as a way to listen to MP3's...

I Also have 2 XP's, 1 vista, and 1 windows 7 full version, none of these have issues with drive mapping...

I use the NAS for holding the MP3 collection, photo's and the kids reports and junk....

When i try to map the drive on the starter laptops i go to to the network and select the folder and hit map drive, log in using different credentials, i type the user name and password and it says it can't log in with the user name/password

now i already have accounts set up for everyone... i even tried using the admin account to do it it still wont log in... any ideas?

It shouldn't be any different then in Windows7. Are you running any anti-virus software on the Starter PCs?

Yes... AVG, And Zone Alarm... Being a PC & Network Tech I've Check most of the usual suspects... Although I have noted that the Starter pcs change the user to COMPUTER_NAME/Username for the login credentials... I will say that I'm not the most familiar with Windows 7 YET... But I don't see any reason why it should fail... Another Note worthy mention is that Microsoft has disabled "Homegroup" for starter edition... I don't know if that makes any difference... I have a Printer set up on both of them and they can see all the other PC's on the network...

Homegroup is not necessary for networking, AAMOF I don't use it at all.  If you have a mixed environment, only Win7 machines can be in the homegroup, limiting it's usefulness.

Well thats what I understood from what I was reading... I Only mentioned it because the issue here is only on the starter pc's, I can't find a "Definitive" list of what microsoft has disabled in starter....

Windoze 7 Starter was too limited for me when I bought my daughter a netbook so I chose XP Pro instead.

I assume you disabled Zone Alarm all together and it still failed?  Also, I do think it's a strong possiblity the credentials like you mentioned are causing the headache but I don't know how to get around it.  I assume you have checked out the Microsoft Knowledge Base?

I assume all the data on the NAS could be deleted and you wouldn't loose any sleep over it?  I say that because kids can do the delete thing my accident.  What I do is copy my daughters iTunes files from her netbook to the NAS about once a week if she's purchased something.  Photos I copy as well when the time warrants it.  I do not map the NAS to her netbook, I just use it as a network drive.

As for homework items, a 2GB USB drive will hold a lot of homework if it must be tacken to school or something.
