Slow download
« on: April 30, 2011, 01:39:18 AM »

I've checked speedtest.net and everything is fine with that.  It gave me 14.43 Mbps down and 0.66 Mbps up.  The speed that I download seems to be really slow.  I am getting at most 60 kb/s on nVidia's website and Microsoft's website for download speeds.  I tried directly to the modem with the Microsoft download and got over 600 kb/s for the same download.  I tried this only a few minutes apart so it is not a time of day issue.  I am using MAC filtering and the firmware version is the latest 1.23NA.  I tried disabling GameFuel to no avail.  I've made sure the firewall is endpoint independent.  I made sure the advanced DNS was disabled to no avail.  I even tried setting up the computer as a DMZ to no avail.  I've also tried resetting the modem.  The strange thing is that this only affects downloading from webpages as other applications download at much faster rates.  I've noticed a few of these in the logs:

[INFO]   Wed Apr 28 17:20:56 2004   Blocked outgoing TCP packet from 192.168.0.189:51789 to 63.97.94.33:80 as RST:ACK received but there is no active connection

What is your ISP service? Cable or DSL?
What is your ISP Modem? Stand alone or built in router?
How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?
Any 3rd party security SW installed on the PCs?

The ISP is Bell DSL.  It is a standalone ISP model.  There is no built in router.  I am using a direct wired connection for this particular PC.  In terms of third party security software I am using BitDefender 2010 though I tried disabling it during testing to make sure it was not intefering.  Let me know if I missed anything, but I think that covers your questions.

I'm thinking of setting the router back to Factory settings and trying to see if that resolves the issue.

Have you tried bypassing the router and go direct to the modem? See if the issue is still there. Your download speed from a site is always equal or less then the sites available upload.

I have tried bypassing the router and the speeds increase by a factor of up to 10x.

Try setting the WAN connection speed from Auto to 100 or 1000, depending on what the ISP modem supports.

I did not know which to try to set the WAN to so I tried both and got the same result.  The MS download is going at about 30 kb/s.  I tried once again through the modem directly and got 170-200 kb/s.  I did notice the ping drop when I put it up to 1000.  Any other suggestions?

What kind of download is it? Do you have the link? Need to try to replicate the issue in order to resolve it.

It was just a download from Microsoft's Download Center.  I managed to fix the issue just now.  I reset the router to factory defaults and added back in my MAC filtering and opened a few ports and I'm getting full speed again.  I don't know why it happened but any download from a webpage was slow before I did the reset.  Thanks for all the suggestions.

Glad you found the fix. What ports did you open up and where did you open them?  Remember save off the config to file for safe keeping.

The downloads were working before I opened any ports, so it seems a reset was enough to fix the problem.  Other than that I opened a random port for my other downloads in the special applications section.
