My cable connection is unstable
« on: March 21, 2010, 03:29:01 PM »

For several weeks now, my internet cable speed goes up and down. I downgraded to 1.15 official firmware. Comcast has come out to check it out and everything is fine, any suggestions???

Kinda leaning towards the ISP and the wiring from them. Several people on here having issues with ISP speeds and it's really not the router. I'm on cable here and using a v1.15 router.

How is the cable coming to the house? any splitters on the line? You can have splitters however should be of good quality and should be kept to one or maybe 2 if needed. Did they check the lines and speed while the router was connected or not connected. They should be able to check speeds either way. Also ensure ur LAN cables are good too. Shorter the better between the cable modem and the router. I just installed some new Cat 6 1ft between my modem and router. Cat 5 will be fine too. Speeds isn't something that could be controlled at our level and the only other thing that could effect speeds is others around your area in the neighborhood that could see a drop is speed. That's one thing that effects Cable internet, having more people on the same area system unlike DSL, where the closer you are to the main hub will get you better speeds and is not effected by having more people on the line. Let us know what you find. Check everything, start with One PC connected to the modem, then add the router and check again. Speeds should match closely. See if your router is picking up a public IP address or a private. Public is preferred. Public starts with a 2 character number, ##.###.###.###. Also check DNS addresses in Basic/Interner/Manual, they might not be filled in and you can find these in Status/Device Info/Wan section. Let us know what you find.

I agree, "speeds" going up and down is probably not the router. Wouldn't say it's the ISP quite yet. Most performance issues are inside the PC. But one way you can check is bring up the gateway of the modem (192.168.100.1) and most will give signal readings.

                                 Spec                       Desired
Downstream(Rx)  -15dbmv to +15dbmv     -5dbmv to +3dbmv
Upstream (Tx)    37dbmv to 55dbmv          42dbmv to 48dbmv
Signal to Noise    Above 30db                       Above 36db

For white sheets, check out http://www.cablelabs.com/specifications/CM-SP-RFIv2.0-C02-090422.pdf
(page 46). But its not exactly light reading.

Thanks for the tip, I've entered the numbers you told me, they were missing, and I've changed out the cables and have been working great all day. I'm now getting 20 Megas on my PS3.

Good to hear you got it working better. Hope it works well for you. Wouldn't put it past ISPs to use the cheapest cabling or LAN cables either. I've learned to do my own over the years. I can make sure it's done right and use good quality cabling. Have a great week.
