DNS 320 issues - general
« on: January 31, 2011, 10:43:26 AM »

Hi Folks - thought I'd lodge my question(s) here as no dedicated forum for the 320 - at least, as far as I can see.

I have some conflicting issues - having set my 320 up on my Windows 7 Pro system, I find that the 320 is 'unavailable' each time the machine is booted from cold - the only way in to it is to start 'easy search' and map the drive that way.
If i double click the desktop icon or start from the Start button, it comes up with a username / password - -but the only password associated with the drive is rejected. Same happens if I try to get in from 'My Computer' or 'Network'.

On the wife's laptop, running Win 7 basic, no problem - straight in via 'network', so I assume a machine specific issue that I don't know how to resolve ....

Also, I'd like to use the Yahoo widget - but cannot fathom out how to install....

I'd also like to get to the drive (Volume 1) from the www ..... I can get to the admin pages etc, but not the volume ....

can anybody advise please on the above issues?

Many thanks

Mick

I can't help with the networking problems, but access to your files via WWW i possible in the new firmware. It looks rather primitive, but you can at least upload and download. I wonder why they can't setup the AjaXplorer to access the shared files...

If you setup FTP, you can still use most web browsers to access your files as well. Then you would put ftp:// instead of http:// in front of the url to your nas.

Mick,

Since you have Windows 7 Pro, you have features to the OS used mostly in an enterprise environment.  In the case of your mapped drive not being available immediately, the windows OS is most likely allowing you to begin using your system before the network has fully initialized.  This is the default setting of the Windows OS and I found I was having the same problem (not good if you simply have a media center PC starting automatically and don't want to bother with the desktop - or keyboard).

Try this, I think this is what you need to do to make Windows "slow down":

- In Windows as admin, from the Run command (or search bar), type 'gpedit.msc' (no quotes).  This will open the Local Group Policy Editor (not the same as Local Security Policy in Admin Tools).
- Look for Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System --> Logon
- Set the "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" to Enabled.
- Reboot.

I have found this works 99% of the time.  Every once in a while I get the red X and it says it can't connect to the resource, but that is very rare and probably means my DNS-321 is tired and wants to be rebooted.

I'm thinking Windows 7 Basic does not have the ability to set Local Group Policies because I am pretty sure it doesn't have the ability to join a domain.  So my guess is that your Basic machine is actually already defaulted to wait until the network starts up, but that's just a guess.

Good luck.
