New to DS-321
« on: March 26, 2010, 04:15:01 PM »

Hi all,

I just got my new DS-321. I initially configured to run with one 2GB drive in standard mode. I then installed a second 2GB drive and want to change the configuration to RAID1. I have followed the directions for installing the second drive and rebuilding. How do I know my DS-321 is now operating in RAID1 mode? When I used the configuration tool, Volume_1 and Volume_2 still show up as two separate drives, available for mapping. Is this right?

Thanks in advance for your assistance, and for patience with this newbie to the world of RAID.

If it's showing Volume_1 and Volume_2, it's not a RAID1 configuration.  I have two drives in my 321, formatted as RAID1.  I only have a single volume (Volume_1).

I started life with my DNS-321 with two drives installed at the very first boot, and selected RAID1 when it asked about formatting. I'm afraid I can't help you reconfigure into a RAID1 array.

Another newbie.

You can put a virgin drive in and select RAID-1 during the initial configuration.  Take the second drive out, connect it to a computer, and use the disk manufacturer's diagnostics to write zeros to the drive.  Then put it back in and configure the RAID.

This worked fine, John. I didn't have to reformat my initial HD with a computer however. The formating function built in to the DS321 software did the job for me, once I had selected RAID1 as my preference. Thanks!
