Should I?
« on: April 23, 2010, 05:46:06 PM »

Hey,

I'm looking to get a new router since my belkin doesn't work well with my two xbox 360's.

I'm thinking of getting a DGL-4500. However I heard that it may auto reconnect with heavy traffic.

Does it do this a lot? Is it noticeable?

Also, when I get this router, what firmware should I get if I buy it brand new? Thanks.

the Latest firmware 1.22.

Since 1.22 I run two 360 consoles at the same time without any issues.  I have them both on DHCP and then used the router to reserve the same 2 IPs for the consoles, set the gaming rules according to the instructions in this forum and enabled uPNP.

both of my 2 4500s run well. One has FW v1.15 and the other has v1.22NA. The one FW version that was in question and had issues was v1.21NA. All has been good since v1.22NA was released. Also review the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky for streamlining and using various options that work well with this router.

Today I hosted a 32person game of Fat Princess(PS3 game), while downloading the StarCraft 2 beta and seeding some torrents. No lag. Besides all the odd, but harmless glitches, I am quite happy with my 4500. Will never hold the same place in my heart as the 4300, but its still a great router.

All the postings of connection problems on the forums concerned me so I set out to stress the system with the latest firmware. the router came with 1.21NA but I updated it immediately after powering up and before configuring anything.

-Torrent server running with 150 torrents all attempting downloads at the same time, averaging 280k upload with the automatic upload checked but only about 40+ were actually downloading.
-The WI streaming video from the Nintendo channel
-PS3 doing a 4 hour video chat

With all this stuff running, all clients in the house, totalling 4, that weren't part of the test above still had internet access without any problem. the router hasn't ever rebooted except during configuration and the only problem I've found so far appears to be a power saving feature of my phone gives it half A$$ connection to the network. setting the phone wireless to max performance fixes the issue so I don't think it's the router.

However, my 'new' router did come with scratches on the screen.  I wonder if if was reboxed but figured it won't get looked at anyway, and won't stay on for the coolness factor.

Yea, to be honest, i think alot of the firmware complaints have been based on incorrect/different/changed configuration settings then actual glitches. With a few exceptions ofcourse. Biggest thing you can do to help your router? Read the Help section. ::chuckle:: seriously, theres alot of good info in there.
