Low speed for Mac -> DIR-655 -> Synology DS411j
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:27:08 AM »

I have a MacBook Pro that uses AFP to mount a shared folder on a Synology DS411j, and between them sits my DIR-655. When I copy/move files from my Mac to the NAS I get low throughput. All my devices are n-devices.

Mac -> wireless -> DIR-655 -> wired -> DS411j gave 5-6MB/s
Mac -> wired     -> DIR-655 -> wired -> DS411j gave ~8MB/s

The NAS Resource Monitor shows a cpu usage of 20% and a memory usage of 40%.

A friend of mine also has a Mac and a DS411j, but a router of another brand, and he gets throughputs of 30MB/s on wireless. That leads me to believe there is some (configuration) problem with my D-Link.

Setup reserved IP addresses on the router for the devices?
Try setting Firewall to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Turn off QoS.
Disable Advanced DNS Service and DNS Relay to test?

Its preferred to have a switch between the router and your devices. This helps prevent any processing by the router as the routers switch is probably handling other traffic and thus might be causing a slow down in the regard. And if you put in a switch, the the MAC and NAS can communicate directly with out any interference from the router.

Also make sure your using Cat5e cabling minimum or preferred Cat 6.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give the settings a shot. I don't have a switch, and I hope to manage without.

I think I have Cat 7, should that be ok?

I suppose...didn't know that Cat7 was out..I knew it was slated to be. Might try Cat 5e or 6 while testing.
A switch would help your NAS out for sure.

The settings I changed in the router did not improve the speed at all. Is there a place to check how good a connection my router thinks it has to the different devices?

My devices are connected to the DIR-655, which in turn is connected to another home-central that is connected to the internet. Is there a way to check that the data is routed the way I want it to be, and not via the home-central?

I'm fumbling in the dark here ;)

I would test with out this Home central being online if thats possible. Can you connect up 2 PCs to the router and do some testing?
I don't think the Home Center would effect speeds between 2 devices if connected to the 655 router.

What is this home central?
I presume that internet connectivity is good as is?
It's usually preferred to connect the router like this>
ISP Modem> router> all other devices after router.

I would change the WiFi mode from Mixed to Mixed G and N. Not much call for A or B modes anymore.

The home-central is really and ISP Modem, but it also does digital tv.
Internet connectivity is good.

I'll change the mode, check ifconfig on the NAS and on the Mac, and perhaps configure a static IP and connect Mac <-> NAS directly.

Ya that would be a good test, direct from Mac to NAS. Let us know how it goes.

Another piece of info first.

Network Utility on my Mac reports a link speed of 144 MBit/s, and https://discussions.apple.com/message/10821081?messageID=10821081 has a few posts that can explain this.

Seems I should run my n network on 5GHz, and use a bandwidth of 40MHz. I have only n devices, so I actually believe I can set both WLAN and LAN to n only. Is my DIR-655 dual band, so I can use 5GHz for a/n and 2.4GHz for b/g/n?

I belive the 655 is single band 2.4Ghz only. If you have devices that support N then you could run single mode N.

Psst: if you want good stuff buy Vigor2130n  look for specs on this site: http://www.draytek.com/user/PdInfoDetail.php?Id=111

All routers have their good and bad points.

Quote
The 2130n is a damned fast wired router with extensive QoS features. But its high price ($243), limited availability, modest IPsec tunnel throughput, missing wireless controls and buggy USB drive file sharing make for a poor overall value.

Alien,
Were here to help people with there current hardware and product, not here to talk about what you think might be better hardware then Dlink. All Mfrs have there own problems regardless if how well things work. Have you check out the other forums for other product yet? I bet you see just as many posts or more regarding problems.

Lets keep focused on what users currently have and help each other get what they have going better for them as best we can. If we can then we can say we tried and help them find something that maybe works better for them at that point. 90-95% est problems of devices is user configuration problems and external interference. These can be resolved. Just takes some patience and people willing to work with others to troubleshoot. Its not that hard.

This Draytek is a business class router, not home end user so your playing why more then what you pay for in a 655 and theres no comparison.

And since you so seemed to be so anti-Dlink, then why don't you stop posting here and go elsewhere since you don't seem to be offering any help or good advice.
