DNS-323 NAS issue with Bonjour and Mac OS X mounting
« on: May 09, 2010, 07:24:09 PM »

Hello,
I'm experiencing a strange issue with mounting my DNS-323 in Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
With our without the Bonjour addon, I am always able to see it in Finder under "Shared".   It shows up as the name I gave it in the web interface under Setup -> Device -> Name.  I've set up a script to mount it automatically on startup, by sending the command  mount smb://mydnsname/Volume_1

The strange thing is, this doesn't always work, especially when I switch between wireless and wired on my home network (I'm on a laptop, but depending on the room I'm in, I can plug in).  Say, when I got from wireless to wired, and the MacBook runs the mount again, it will tell me "the server "mydnsname" is not available" and the connection fails.  However, I can easily run a command by mounting the server by its IP address and it works perfectly.  Sometimes I even end up in a situation where it's mounted by IP address, and right underneath it's listed by its name, but I can't mount it by clicking on it.  To make matters even more confusing, after a few minutes that I've been wired, the mount command using the DNS name will work just fine.

I'm not an expert, but what is the reason that it seems the NAS isn't readily availble by the name I gave it, but it seems to be just fine by IP address?  And why does it start working again shortly thereafter?

Thanks for your help!
