Advanced routing question
« on: March 24, 2009, 09:35:35 PM »

Alright... I have a question that I've been struggling for days to find an answer for.

I'm currently using my dir-655 for basic wireless purposes. I recently had an older Linksys WRT-54g come into my possession, and I've been interested in setting it up in client mode to connect my XBOX 360 wirelessly. I installed the dd-wrt firmware on the linksys, and it was easy enough to set up. My problem has been with trying to set up the dir-655 to route to the linksys.

I don't know a whole lot about networking, but here's what I'm thinking: I need to route the connection from the dir-655 to the linksys, but they're on different subnets. Whenever I try to add a new route to the list, it tells me that the gateway is not on the destination subnet. I'm really confused. Is this possible or am I just going about it the wrong way? I've been following the directions right from the dd-wrt knowledge base: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Mode_Wireless

Can anyone help? Thanks.

The DIR does not allow internal routing. Sorry. There's a couple of threads about this "should'nt have / should have" discussion, so you might want to check those out.

Bunch of thoughts:

1 - if the wrt is not on the same subnet, it is acting as a repeater - not a client.

2 - the wrt can connect to the 655 as a client or repeater - I have tested it

3 - xbox live connects via wrt as a client or repeater through the 655 - I have tested it

4 - on both routers set mtu to 1500 and enable UPnP.  Set Xbox network to auto - Xbox then connects to live

5 - don't need port forward or any of that junk

6 - I run up to 4 xbox 360s at the same time through the 655 wired and wireless combined

7 - LOVE my 655 - runs 7 pcs, 4 xbox, VOIP, VPN, streams HD, Tversity, printer and 5 DGS-2205 Gb switches

It's really that easy? No silly complicated routing involved? Just to be sure we're on the same page, I'm trying to use the wrt to pick up the dir-655's wireless signal and repeat it via ethernet to the xbox across the house, so I don't have to buy the $100 XBOX wireless adapter or string a 50ft ethernet cable across the house. That's how you have yours set up?

Also, what are the requirements, and/or hangups for using UPnP and changing the mtu? Do I need a static IP or anything? A step-by-step walk through would be handy, if possible.

It is that simple.  No need for the xbox wireless adapter or running cables.  No impacts on MTU (1500 for cable or 1462 for DSL).  Can't play xbox on line (can't logon to XBox Live) without UPnP enabled.  Well, you might be able to connect to Xbox Live, but NAT would be restricted, so you would have problems inviting friends and joining games.  Enable UPnP.

Assuming the wrt connects to the 655 and the wrt gets the internet, proceed as follows.  Getting the wrt to connect to the net through the 655 is up to you.

1 - wrt: set UPnP to on and set MTU to 1500 (1462 if DSL) - save, reboot, verify settings took
2 - 655: set UPnP to on and set MTU to 1500 (1462 if DSL) - save, reboot, verify settings took
3 - Connect XBox to wrt LAN port (not WAN) with network cable.
4 - Xbox network settings - my xbox - system - network - auto get address.  Test xbox network.  If it does not connect to Xbox Live, you missed something.  WRT assigns the dynamic IP - no static needed.  It does not matter if the wrt is repeater (different subnet) or client (same subnet).
4 - play Xbox - go wild
5 - you can connect up to 3 other devices to the wrt LANs in addition to the xbox.
6 - If you want to use Tveristy on the XBox, the wrt has to be a client on the same subnet as the Tversity server.

I got tired of fighting my teenagers over using Xbox, so I bought my own - drives Mom nutz  8)

I got it to work! I set the wrt up in "client bridge" mode, and it works beautifully. I'm not sure why the first tutorial I looked at was having me try something so complicated when this solution was so much simpler... routing to static IPs on different subnets... pssh. Thanks for your help! Now I can go back to streaming my Netflix and pwning 13 yr olds in Halo!

Hey mmorby..
I also have a DIR655, and have an old Linksys WRT150 router.  Do you remember seeing any instructions in your searching to do -exactly- what you are doing, except using a 150 or another linksys N router?  Your original post is an otherwise perfect description of what I want to do.  Thanks. :)

To add to this.. I flashed my wrt150 with v24std generic.
Went through the settings, and at the client setting, the Xbox360 will connect to the network(2ndrouter)  with 'Client', but will not at 'Client bridge'.  I set everything up with the pea****thread.. http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=51486
When in 'Client' mode, I still can't get the xbox onto the network to get WMC connected, it doesn't see my computer.  I tried the auto network on xbox, and noticed with 'Client' mode it assigned DNS info, on 'Client bridge' mode the DNS info is 0000, on the xbox.  Any help or futher guidance?  The primary router is a DIR655, and the one I'm trying to use is a linksys wrt150.  Primary computer is wired.
