UPnP AV server/clients?
« on: May 25, 2010, 03:15:38 PM »

Hello,

I'm new to the DNS 323 and the idea of storing my media on a networked device. I'm attempting to setup the upnp av media server features of the device and I have found that my difficulty seems to be finding a program to play the media with. I don't have an xbox or ps3 i just want to be able to stream my media from the box to my pc's/laptops (all of which are running vista although i would like to be able to play to xp as well). Apparently WMP 11 works as a client but I have yet to be able to discern how exactly to access/play any of my files using it. I found a java based client called cidero which does see the dns so i know it is hosting but it is unable to actually play any of the media. I've also tried to use tversity but am again confused how to get the program to see the device, I was hoping as the name suggests it would be fairly plug and play but this seems not to to be the case. Does anyone have any suggestions for good clients or how to get wmp 11 to behave?

Thanks,

JIMSY

Is there any specific reason why you cannot just go to network folder on NAS with your media files and open them with PC media player of your choice?
Xbox or PS3 cannot access network file share like "standard" PC/MAC so the only way for them to get content is to use uPnP media player, which is often has limited capabilities and formats supported.
With PC media player you are limited only by CODECs currenly loaded and installed and can upgrade any time.

I assumed that using the UPnP protocol would be easier on my network connection and limit the amount of lag or skipping i would get while playing the media files. I'm limited to 100 base t transfer rates and wireless G connections. If this is not the case then I guess I can stop worrying about it. Thanks.

It's a function of the player, not the protocol used. 100MBit should be fine.

All my devices use network shares for access, including my WD TV Live which is my primary device for TV viewing.

3 x DNS-323 with 2 x 2TB WD Drives each for a total of 12 TB Storage and Backup. Running DLink Firmware v1.08 and Fonz Fun Plug (FFP) v0.5 for improved software support.

Highest quality Canon HD video camera mode (MXP) has a bitrate 24Mbit/s for 1080i resolution. Far less than 80-88 Mbit/s real life transfer maximum for full duplex 100M link.
Anyway AFAIK uPnP media player will not conserve bandwidth. It just offers device independent data access and stream transfer protocol in most cases. And even if it does it means loss of quality during transcoding and compression. But this is certainly not the case in case of NAS as on-fly transcoding requires powerful processor.

I play a 20GB .AVI BRRip file of Avatar on my WDTV Live connected to a 100MB ADSL2+ Switch that is connected to a 1GB Linksys Switch that my DNS323 is connected to using network shares for access. and it is smashing...  ;D
