Shareport and 3G speed
« on: November 30, 2010, 01:32:37 AM »

I noticed that D-link has made shareport enabled firmware for my DIR-635.
I upgraded my fimware and Shareport works with Shareport software 1.17 (in XP 32bit and Win 7 64bit)
I have tested shareport with usb-memory and the speeds have been ~2.4MB/s download and ~1.1MB/s upload.

I don't have 3G connection yet, but i'm planning of getting one.

Has anyone else tried using shareport for 3G connections? What speeds have you got?

I'm planning of getting 3G connection with maximum speed. (which is ~7-15Mbps download)

Can't wait for someone else to test this out so i orderer D-Link DWM-156 yesterday.
The availability was 10-15 working days. I hope to get it before christmas.

If my DIR-635 regognises DWM-156 i'm planning to get my 3G sim-card from Saunalahti who offers "full speed 3G" for 14.60euros/month and no 12/24month contracts. So if it does not work properly i can cancel the connection anytime.

The service provider Saunalahti says that "full speed 3G" means speeds up to 15Mbps. But D-Link DWM-156 specs say that it's capped to 7.2Mbps so it won't break any speedrecods. But i expect to get more than with my current 1M/512Kbps ADSL.

Oh i can hardly wait to get my hands on this new stuff.

I try to remember to post some results to this forum. I will test raw download/upload speeds, ping times in games, and general performance with multiple users (maybe 3-4 users simultaneously)

Oh, and (some of you probably already guessed this) the place i live is Finland countryside.

Got my DWM-156 3G HSUPA USB ADAPTER today.

I haven't yet installed it to my wlan-router. First i'm going to test it on my netbook Asus Eee 1000H.

Installing software was pretty easy and connection was established easily. I only needed to correct the APN address. But at this point it is only EDGE connection so it is slooooow.

The DWM-156 is connected straight to one USB connector on my netbook. Netbook is sitting by the window and there should not be too much obstacles blocking the signal. The weather now is about -13 degrees celcius and there is pretty dense fog outside so it may be interfering with the signal. There's so much frozen water in the air right now.

The software version included is v1.05 (UI) and 1.1.17.103 (Application)
In D-link finland support there is absolutely no software for this product.

The testing continues ---------->

Sad news. The testing is now over because D-link DWM-156 HSDPA modem does not support 900MHz frequency networks that 90% of Finland is using.

In 900MHz it supports only EDGE speeds that go only up to 200kbps.
Full HSDPA (3G) speed is only supported on 2100MHz frequency that is used only in some large citys.

The shop where i bought this did not mention anything about this. The package of manuals that come with DWM-156 do not mention anything about this.
The only place where i found this information was in website of D-link finland. There was one datasheet in english where it states the following.

GSM / GPRS / EDGE works in 850 / 900 / 1900 MHz

HSDPA works in 850 / 1900 / 2100 Mhz

Here is a link to that datasheet:
ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/datasheets/DWM-156.pdf

I'm going to send this DWM-156 back to the shop and get my money back.
Sadly all D-link HSDPA modems seem to have this same flaw. So they all are just useless in Finland.

Before i send this baby back to the shop i still need to try it on Shareport. Now i only tested it connected straight to my netbook.

I have now tested DWM-156 with my DIR-635 and i can confirm that it works, somehow.

I turned off the pin-code asking because in DIR-635 settings there is no place to put your pin-code.
Before that i only got red led on DWM-156.

Then i set the WWAN settings right.
Now i got yellow led on DWM-156 indicating that device is initializing.
This continued and there was no internet connection yet.

I think that my DIR-635 was unable to send some activation signal to DWM-156 because no matter what i tried it stayed disconnected.

Then i set the usb-settings in DIR-635 from 3G -> Shareport and used the Shareport software on my netbook to connect to DWM-156. Then i used the DWM-156 connection manager to initiate the connection.
Then i went back to DIR-635 settings and changed that usb-setting back from Shareport -> 3G.

And TADAA! We have a connection! And it stayed on until i pulled the plug on my DIR-635.
After that i got that yellow light again.
Then i needed to make that 3G -> Shareport -> 3G swap again to get the connection running again.

So the conclusion is that this thing works. But you need to do some tricks to get it running.

I hope this test report helps someone. As myself i learned some new stuff by doing this so it was not just a waste of time and money.

And this Shareport thing is nice. It just needs some tweaking and bug splatting.
