Slow wifi 2.4 and 5 N 40mhz
« on: May 26, 2010, 07:43:21 PM »

Okay I had a WRT600N but ended up giving it to my parents... so I decided to get one of these DIR-825. I am having nothing but problems with it.

I have tried a million variations on the settings, even installed DD-WRT (speed was the same as with stock firmware).

Router is configured as follows:
Both 5ghz and 2.4ghz are setup for N only.
N-only
Auto Channel
Auto 20/40mhz
WPA Personal
AES encryption

I have tried connecting with two laptops:
Intel 6300 Ultimate N (3 Antenna)
Dell 1510 N

Also, They say they are connected at 300mbps!

Both seem to max out around 3-4MegaBytes/Sec which is only 24-32Megabit...

Since I tried DD-WRT and stock firmware, along with several different settings I am wondering what else I can do..

BTW these tests were done sitting about 10 feet from the router...

You might try Firmware 2.02NA, instead of the latest 2.03NA. See the topic "New Firmware 2.03 NA."

I've been using 2.03NA since its release and I've had to go back to 2.02NA given the 50% decrease in wireless throughput with the newest firmware...  I used the same wireless settings between both firmware and the 2.03NA gave me only 4-5 MB/s while the 2.02NA has consistently given me 10-11 MB/s on the 5ghz band.  Pretty upsetting.  Hopefully, smallnetbuilders.com won't do another test with the latest firmware otherwise this router is gonna be bumped down even lower on the standings.  Pretty pathetic, actually, to have to revert to an older firmware.  On the positive side, the newest firmware did fix a couple issues I was having but not important enough to sacrifice my wireless speeds.

I just added my extra antennas to my Intel 5300 and now see 300Mbps connection BUT with a throughput of about 27-30Mbps (causing high resolution audio dropouts). I want to roll back to the last firmware, but one reason I updated was the 5gHz band 20/40 setting wouldn't stick unless I had 2.03. Will try tonight. What a cf.

Don't use the "802.11n only" option in 802.11 Mode settings. If using "Mixed 802.11n and 802.11a" instead, the 5Ghz 20/40 setting will stick.

BTW you better rollback to pre 2.03 firmware versions; the latest one not only has throughput issues, but also much decreased wireless output power (>6db).

Thanks Athan. I just tested a quick file transfer and was seeing about 3MB/sec.

I was worried the N/A setting would degrade performance but I do remember it will stick.

Thanks! Let's hope it works.

Well, rolling back didn't work because my Intel 5300 keeps connecting the A-band. Good grief.
