Is gigabit ethernet upgrade worth it for me?
« on: June 17, 2010, 11:02:37 PM »

Hi,

I noticed last night that my ethernet adaptor is gigabit. I know the DIR-615 doesn't do gigabit ethernet, so was wondering about upgrading. However, I'm not sure that there is any advantage to me at this moment in time.

I have two pc's wired into the router, and 3/4 that connect wirelessly. I  have a 10Mb cable internet connection. At the moment I don't have a network storage, or stream media. Nor do I see this happening in the near future. We don't tend to shift large files around between PC's very often, so it seems to me that an upgrade would not offer any real world benefits. Am I correct in this assumption?

Also, just on the topic of gigabit ethernet, how on erth do I know if the patch cables between the pc's and router are cat5 or cat6? Does it really make a difference, or would a gigibit router simply have a stab at providing fastest speed regardless?
