Streaming MKV on DSM-750 - SOLVED
« on: June 26, 2010, 10:32:31 PM »

I was having trouble streaming MKV files (generated by MakeMKV software). I did the following:

1. installed K-Lite codec (full package) on my home server (can also be done on the machine where you are streaming media from)
2. i was able to stream MKV via PLAYON (www.playon.tv) and using its "My Media (beta)" feature. I selected the folder that holds my MKV media
3. Playon require VLAN player to be installed, which i installed as well. Just check if your machine can view MKV using VLAN, if it can then you can stream it to your DSM-750 via playon as well

i was able to stream MKV via PLAYON flawlessly

hope this helps

good news wakas - thanks for sharing. Are you able to run this without a PC running?

This is my  goal - DSM-750 on and NAS on. Play files no PC on.

Right now I need the D-Link Media Server to run on a PC and it needs to be on....  :-\

I would recommend the DNS-321 or 323. MKV is supported on the UPnP AV media serve built in.

wakkas,

Hey, thanks for the advice on the playon server. I installed it and movies definately play better then through the "default" server. Movies that wouldn't play at all now play well, movies play with the sound sync'd to the action and now I can pause, stop and rewind all movies where as before it was hit or miss. I even managed to stream Itunes songs which I wasn't able to before.

It looks like the playon server utilizes VLC to stream the media. VLC can play a lot of formats. I"ll probably be able to play movies unconverted from my digital camera which I've always had to convert before! That's a huge bonus.

The only thing it wouldn't play is DRM .WMA tunes I get from Napster. That's not a big issue because the default windows media server plays them fine.

I also had no problems playing some of the internet media as well. I was watching some PBS and CNN shows. I'm not really interested in Internet TV (at least not yet) but it's nice to know I can access this stuff with the D-link media server (for a price).
