Connecting D-Link DIR-655 to Motorola Surfboard SBG6580

I upgraded to Time Warner Road Runner Extreme. 
My old cable modem was replaced with a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 Wireless Cable Modem with DOCSIS 3.
.
I would like to turn off wireless on the Motorola and use my D-Link DIR-655 Wireless Modem instead.
.
Is this something that can be done?  And will the D-Link DIR-655 support DOCSIS 3 and the higher speeds?
.
I did attempt to connect these, but I could never get the D-Link setup to complete.
.
Any suggestions?
