Drives spin down but lights stay on?
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:11:02 PM »

I've seen this a couple of times during the life of my DNS-323 post and pre FFP install. What happens is both drives in my RAID config go to sleep after activity, and the central light dims, but the two disk lights stay lit. Waking up the drives and waiting for them to sleep doesn't cure it. Rebooting the NAS does.

Could it be a file lock or something?

V1.08 2x500GB Seagate RAID. B2 hardware rev.

On mine the disk LEDs are always on - except for when they're flashing - when the unit sleeps the central logo is off, the disk LEDs are on, and the network LED is either on or flashing.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

That's really strange. Either I've never noticed it before and I'm going mad, or it's just started to happen. I could have sworn the disk LEDs went off when the disks did. I've just checked and even after a hard reboot they both stay on even when the drives are off. If I go in to the status page, the central LED comes on but disks don't spin up. The status page seems fine incidentally.

Perhaps DLink could indicate when the LEDs should be on or off. I've recently installed FFP and have enabled SSH but that's the only running service. Perhaps that's why?
